Dear Hiring Manager,

As an enthusiastic teacher who specializes in English Language and Literature, I
am delighted to be applying for a part-time English instructor position. I am
particularly interested in this role because I know your institution emphasizes
raising students as polymaths, and self-reliant people.

I have been teaching for 5 years and have worked in several different settings
including private schools, and university. In this role I was responsible for
developing lesson plans, evaluating students’ ability to meet learning objectives,
and managing classes of up to 35 students. I am skilled in classroom
management and find that the key to keeping the students focuses is offering
them my respect and organizing the lesson plan by using gamification. I get to
know their interest and struggles to make their learning experience as effective
as possible.
I often prepare materials to reinforce the topics. To give an example, I convert
classical games to grammar games such as Monopoly. I feel that these games
provide students with an entertaining learning atmosphere that will serve them
with long-lasting language skills.
I would be honored to join Koç University as it has such an excellent reputation
within the country. I am passionate about the work I do and I believe that my
experience and enthusiasm would help motivate your students.
Thank you for taking the time to review my application. I look forward to
learning more about this opportunity in the future.

Sincerely,

[Ece Dil]

TEACHING PHILOSOPY Ece Dil

According to English Proficiency Index research made by EF in 2019, Turkey has

79th place out of 100 countries. This survey directly points out that even if our
students start to take English courses in 1st grade, they cannot reflect their
knowledge to the test, and when the issue comes to productive skills, especially in
speaking and writing, they are stressed out. In 2017, I’ve conducted research to
measure the English proficiency of Turkish and Indonesian students. Even though
Turkish students’ grammar knowledge is higher, they couldn’t write a descriptive
paragraph and describe the photo verbally. Since our language teaching system is
mainly based on grammar, our students have difficulty in speaking.

Additionally, inequality between female and male students in Turkey is one of the
most crucial matters that all instructors and teachers should pay attention to. I
started to Master’s Degree in the field of gender studies and took courses about
gender inequality in education.

In the light of this information, I’ve shaped my teaching philosophy many years
ago. Learning students’ obstacles and their interests and designing lessons by using
gamification; providing language education for everyone with the same
opportunities such as smart boards, digital games, foreign language books from
high-qualified publishers etc, and creating a learning environment in which all
students feel equal are the key elements of my teaching philosophy.

As teachers, I strongly believe that we should discover the things they like or hate;
their limits –the worst and best sides-. All students are unique in their ways.
Therefore, using the same teaching methodology in each class does not work. We
have to be open-minded, quick problem solvers, creative, and always ready to adapt
our lesson plan according to their talents and needs. Also coding ‘’Sky is the only
limit’’ idea to their minds and teaching them how to believe in themselves are the
major components of the education process. Teachers are not leaders, only team

members. In contrast to the old teaching perspective, I agree that ‘’respect’’ has to
be gained naturally not by using a threat.
