DEFORESTATION (NO)
REINCARNATION
The Government of Indonesia is
committed to reducing emissions, one
of which is through reducing
deforestation. Deforestation or illegal
logging (English: illegal logging) is
illegal logging, transport, and sale of
timber without permits from local
authorities so that the land is diverted
for non-forest uses, such as agriculture
and plantations.
Deforestation can occur for a variety of
reasons: trees or charcoal obtained
from forests can be used or sold for fuel
or as timber, while the land can be
converted to pasture for livestock,
plantations for merchandise, or for
retirees. Logging of trees without
sufficient reforestation can damage the
environment (habitat), extinction of
biodiversity, and aridity. Logging also
has a negative impact on the bio-
sequestration of carbon dioxide from
the air. Areas that have been cleared
are usually experiencing severe soil
erosion and often become deserts.
Neglecting intrinsic values, lack of
inherited values, carelessness in forest
management, and inadequate
environmental laws are some of the
reasons for massive deforestation.
Many countries in the world experience
continuous deforestation, both natural
and human-induced. Deforestation can
cause extinction, climate change,
desertification, and resettlement of the
population. These changes have also
occurred in the past and can be proven
through research on the fossil record.

However, net deforestation rates have
stopped increasing among countries
with a GDP per capita of at least
US$4,600 (id.wikipedia.org).
The prevention is currently being
echoed more by conservation activists.
This is done to reduce the rate of forest
loss thereby reducing greenhouse gas
emissions. Prevention is also carried out
by protecting existing forests from the
threat of various development projects
that are not friendly to the environment.
Prevention of deforestation is currently
carried out by replanting in the form of
reforestation or afforestation.
Reforestation is the replanting of forests
in forest areas, while afforestation is the
replanting of forests in non-forest areas
(cultivation areas). A bare forest
cannot carry out its function correctly.
Therefore, replanting is carried out in
the hope that new forests will grow so
that they can carry out the function of
the forest as a life support (Bentar,
2019).
Indonesia succeeded in reducing
deforestation by 75.03% in the 2019-
2020 period, to 115.46 thousand ha. This
figure is far lower than the 2018-2019
deforestation of 462.46 thousand ha
(Nunu, 2021). When viewed from each
island region in Indonesia, the
deforestation rate is generally
decreasing. However, the following
areas experienced increased
deforestation rates, including Java, NTT,
Sulawesi, and Maluku. According to the
Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) data
for 2022, the deforestation rate per
island area in Indonesia can be seen as
follows.
