Who are we?

Chasing Glaciers is a Climate Change docuseries whose mission is to raise
awareness about how the people and ecosystems of the world are affected by
melting mountain glaciers.

Every year, more pieces of these giant blocks of ice disappear that have stood for
millennia, a devastating reminder of how fast our earth is heating up. Without
them, there is no year-round water source for many places, and without any water,
there is no life.

We started the series in Peru because, in the last 50 years, their glaciers have lost
over 50% of their ice. The impact is already being felt in many parts of the country,
where some cities have to ration their water, and droughts are becoming more
common in rural mountain communities. Yet, aside from the scientific community,
the general population is unaware of the magnitude or implications of the melting
glaciers.

Our third film will focus on the glaciers in the southern part of the Andes near the
cities of Arequipa, Puno, and Cuzco. Many are close to extinction, with some
experts saying they have less than 20 years left. Their runoff during the summer
months plays a significant role in the country’s agricultural economy.

There are three fundamental elements of how each Chasing Glaciers film is told;
Understanding the conflict over dwindling water resources and the risks of the
glaciers collapsing.
Interviewing people with cultural ties to the mountains who depend
economically on the glacier’s water.
Capturing how the environment has changed over time and how the loss of
glacial ice has impacted the ecosystem.

As the temperature continues to rise, access to potable water in Latin America and
worldwide will diminish. Despite having the 8th largest reserves of fresh water in
the world, the World Resources Institute found that Perú could face a water crisis
as soon as 2040 as a direct result of Climate Change and vanishing glaciers.

We want this series to raise the alarm so that governments and communities can
take action now before it is too late. It is made to educate urban and rural
populations about water conservation and the environment. The ultimate goal is to
use our platform to help the primarily impacted indigenous and rural communities
that have lived next to Glaciers for hundreds to thousands of years.

Synopsis: “Draining the White City”

Arequipa, or “The White City,” is surrounded by dormant volcanoes topped with glaciers. The
most famous: “El Misti,” a natural landmark that can be seen from anywhere in the city, was once
covered by ice all year round. Now, snow can only be spotted at its peak for half the year. The city
and agricultural industries depend on the runoff from these glacial volcanos, but before it
reaches them, it must first pass the rural mountain communities.

They protect this water and have adapted to Climate Change by forming irrigation committees.
Still, as the years pass, the demand from the city increases, the weather is more unpredictable,
and there is less water from the glaciers. While they watch the city and businesses grow below,
they are forced to abandon their ancestral lands. We travel to Arequipa to hear the population’s
perspectives about their environment while the country pulls itself out of political turmoil with
the 4th president in the last three years. Our expedition has two goals: How much time de
Arequipa’s glaciers have left, and can they be saved?
Run Time: 30 min Genre: Narrative Documentary Themes: Climate Change,
Environmental Justice, Adventure, Human Rights

Our Audience
Our audience is young to middle-aged adults (18-44) in South America, The United States and
Europe who care about the environment. They are worried about Climate Change and want to see
how it is affecting the world. They are outdoors enthusiasts, scientists, engineers, environmental
activists, travelers, mountaineers, and students. To capture their attention, we tell a compelling
and emotional narrative while traveling to the areas affected and climbing the mountains where
the glaciers are found.

About the creator, Mark Gregory

I am originally from Peekskill, New York, where I grew up with a love of
nature, hiking through the Hudson Valley. A traveler at heart, I have spent
years in Europe and South America and started this project in 2018 while
conducting my master’s thesis research in Peru. I wrote about international
intervention in Climate Change and found multiple cases of glaciers that
would disappear in the next 15-20 years. I was shocked to find very little
information about this phenomenon and that large cities like Huancayo
were already experiencing water scarcity.
Films like “Chasing Ice” inspired me to create a short documentary about the thesis research. It
won the “Best Exploration and Adventure Film” at The North Face’s Mountain Film Festival in
Lima in 2019.

This motivated my team and me to create the production company “Kumbre Media.” During the
Pandemic, we filmed the second installment, which focuses on the largest group of glaciers in
Peru, the Cordillera Blanca. We released it in July 2022, and it is currently going through the indie
film circuit.

We are an entirely independently-financed project, but we aspire to continue to make

documentaries about the glaciers of Peru and eventually around the world through the support
of brand partnerships, fundraising, and grants.

Before conservation starts, there has to be education. We believe that Chasing Glaciers
can inspire more people to visit these melting glaciers before they disappear or be
better prepared should disaster strike. As more people understand their value, there
can be a movement to turn the surrounding mountain areas into national parks.

Most importantly, an entire generation will grow up knowing to conserve their water
resources because, without the glaciers, they will eventually run out.
