ISAIAH 7:1-16
Isa 7:1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the
son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son
of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but
could not prevail against it.
7:2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with
Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees
of the wood are moved with the wind.
7:3 Then said the Lord unto Isaiah, go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and
Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the
highway of the fuller's field;
7:4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be
fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger
of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.
7:5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil
counsel against thee, saying,

7:7 Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it come

7:8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is
Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken,
that it be not a people.
7:9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is
Remaliah's son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.
7:10 Moreover the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying,
7:11 Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth,
or in the height above.

Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not
overcome him.
16:6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the
Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this
day.
16:7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, saying, I am
thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king
of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.
16:8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the
LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house, and sent it for a present to
the king of Assyria.
16:9 And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria
went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive
to Kir, and slew Rezin.

Assyria + Judah
vs
 The destruction that came upon the
northern kingdom was directly from God
Himself. The Assyrians were merely the
instruments that He used to carry out His
purpose. Through Isaiah, who began to
prophesy before the fall of Samaria, the Lord
referred to the Assyrian hosts as the "rod of
mine anger." "The staff in their hand," He
said, "is mine indignation."

This is quickly seen from the fact that the
confederacy did not succeed in breaking
Judah; but rather that God employed the
predatory power, Assyria, swiftly to break
the confederacy, to destroy both kings, and
to scatter Israel and Syria throughout the
cities of the Medes, even though Judah
herself was not wholly devoted to God.

Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced
cities of Judah, and took them. And Hezekiah king of Judah

will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah
king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty
talents of gold. And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that
was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of
the king's house. At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold
from the doors of the temple of the Lord, and from the
pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. And Isaiah said unto
them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not
afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of
the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Behold, I will send a blast
upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own
land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. And it
came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five
thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they
were all dead corpses. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and
went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. And it came to pass, as he
was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech
and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped
into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

 The might and
power of Assyria
before its fall
Among the cities of the ancient world in the
days of divided Israel one of the greatest was
Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian realm…. In
the time of its temporal prosperity Nineveh
was a center of crime and wickedness.
Inspiration has characterized it as "the bloody
city, full of lies and robbery." In figurative
language the prophet Nahum compared the
Ninevites to a cruel, ravenous lion. Nahum
3:1, 19. {Prophets and Kings 265.2}
The Assyrian power to the northward, long
supreme, was no longer to rule the nations.
Egypt on the south, in whose power the
king of Judah was vainly placing his trust,
was soon to receive a decided check. All
unexpectedly a new world power, the
Babylonian Empire, was rising to the
eastward and swiftly overshadowing all
other nations. {Prophets and Kings 422.1}

That is, though ancient Judah was not to
suffer defeat by the confederacy of
Israel and Syria, she was, nevertheless,
also to be brought under tribute to
ancient Assyria. And, as we shall see,
the spirit of this confederacy did not end
with that of ancient Israel and Syria.

But the simple historical fact that these two
kingdoms were overthrown centuries before
Immanuel was even born, brings a time-
discrepancy which can be reconciled only by the
conclusion that all four nations (Judah, Israel,
Syria, and Assyria) involved in this historical
action, were typical of four others that were to
arise sometime following Immanuel's birth; for
after His birth, Israel and Syria were to be
conquered by Assyria.

 In the sixth century the papacy had become firmly established. Its seat of
power was fixed in the imperial city, and the bishop of Rome was declared
to be the head over the entire church. Paganism had given place to the
papacy. The dragon had given to the beast "his power, and his seat, and
great authority." Revelation 13:2. And now began the 1260 years of papal
oppression foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation. Daniel
7:25; Revelation 13:5-7…. Christians were forced to choose either to yield
their integrity and accept the papal ceremonies and worship, or to wear
away their lives in dungeons or suffer death by the rack, the fagot, or the
headsman's ax. Now were fulfilled the words of Jesus: "Ye shall be
betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and
some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of
all men for My name's sake." Luke 21:16, 17. Persecution opened upon the
faithful with greater fury than ever before, and the world became a vast
battlefield…. The accession of the Roman Church to power marked the
beginning of the Dark Ages. {GC 54.2-3}
 And now began the 1260 years of papal oppression foretold in the
prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation. Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:5-7
Necessarily, then, there must be found in the
Christian dispensation a backslidden Christian power
(Israel) confederated with a pagan one (Syria), to the
end of assimilating or annihilating the orthodox
Christians (Judah). And the only such confederacy in
the Christian era was the unholy union of Church
and State which ruled during the Dark Ages, and
which sought the destruction of the "born again,"
who refused to depart from the Apostolic faith and
submit to a Christian-Pagan (Israel-Syrian)

 Foretelling, to Daniel, the work of this wicked power, the
angel declared: "And he shall speak great words against the
Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given
into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of
time." Dan. 7:25. As a natural consequence, therefore,
the type, ancient Assyria, finds its "double" in the power
which in the Middle Ages broke up that church-state
union. And as that union was dissolved by the present
Protestant nations, the conclusion inescapably follows that
modern Assyria reaches down to our day, thus certifying
the fact that Isaiah's prophecy is correlative with Nahum's.

nominal churches and the sovereign

It being true that the wounded head symbolizes a
religious body, and that there is no distinction in
appearance between the wounded head and the
six uninjured heads, then the fundamental truth is
that they all are figures of religious bodies.
Moreover, as these symbolical prophecies deal
with the Western Civilization, the home of
Christendom, the heads definitely characterize
the Christian denominations….

…Says the prophet: "I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;
and he had two horns like a lamb." Verse 11. Both the appearance of this
beast and the manner of its rise indicate that the nation which it
represents is unlike those presented under the preceding symbols…. But
the beast with lamblike horns was seen "coming up out of the earth."
Instead of overthrowing other powers to establish itself, the nation thus
represented must arise in territory previously unoccupied and grow up
gradually and peacefully.… What nation of the New World was in 1798
rising into power, giving promise of strength and greatness, and attracting
the attention of the world? The application of the symbol admits of no
question. One nation, and only one, meets the specifications of this
prophecy; it points unmistakably to the United States of America. Again
and again the thought, almost the exact words, of the sacred writer has
been unconsciously employed by the orator and the historian in
describing the rise and growth of this nation. {GC 439-440.}

Rev. 13:11 And I beheld another
beast coming up out of the
earth; and he had two horns
like a lamb, and he spake as a
dragon.

For as Jonas was three days and three
nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of
man be three days and three nights in the heart
of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in
judgment with this generation, and shall
condemn it: because they repented at the
preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than
Jonas is here.

 So much for the sign of Jonah to the Jews in Christ's time. Let us now
consider for the remainder of our time the possibility that the rest of
Jonah's experience is a type also. If so, what do Jonah, Nineveh, the
sea, the fish, and the fish's expelling Jonah after he had partly learned
his lesson typify? Jonah's whole experience could be a type of God's
people with a message that they were to proclaim to the world. It could
be a type of the duties God gave to His people and they, like Jonah,
wanted to put it aside and "let George do it," so to speak.
The purpose of this study is to help us all to see that Jonah's experience
is a sign not only to the Jews in Christ's time but also to you and to me.
Whom does Jonah represent by his running away? -- Not the 144,000,
for they do not run away. On the contrary, they "follow the Lamb
whithersoever He goeth" (Rev. 14:4). We shall now briefly mention the
high points in Jonah's experience and see what lesson we can get out of

 There arose a great storm at sea where Jonah was, and Jonah
was sleeping through it all. This is a fitting type of a people
who knew they were commissioned to carry a message but
were sleepy and wholly indifferent to their responsibility. Then
you remember that the men on board ship discovered Jonah to
be the cause of their great trouble and so they cast him into the
sea. The sea, as we have already learned, is a symbol of the
Old Country, the storehouse of waters, peoples. While Jonah
was there in the sea he was swallowed by the fish and realizing
that he was in the depths of the sea and in trouble, he began to
pray to God for deliverance. This typified an experience God's
people were to have at some time while they were in the sea --

Revelation 13:1. And I stood upon the sand of the sea,
and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven
heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns,
and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
God had prepared the fish to swallow up Jonah
because He was determined that Jonah should be
the one to take the message to Nineveh and Jonah,
not at all inclined to do it, arranged for his passage
to another place than Nineveh. And so the fish
swallowed up Jonah to take him where God wanted
him to go. The experience Jonah had while he was
in the belly of the fish was a good one for him, for it
caused him to realize to a degree his need of God.
He realized that he was gone without God's

Next, Jonah was vomited on shore by the fish. The
earth, being the opposite of sea (the Old Country)
signifies or typifies God's people being brought to the
new world. And it was after Jonah came on shore that
God met him the second time and told him to take a
message to Nineveh. This shows that a message was due
to arise sometime in the new world with a prediction
concerning Nineveh. And the fish was a type of the
providential circumstances which God used to bring His
people to the new world. The message Jonah was to
bear to Nineveh is a type of our message arising in the

You know that man naturally starts out with his right
foot. Now, since the angel's right foot was upon the
sea and his left foot upon the land, the symbolism
shows that he starts out on the sea, the province of
Daniel's beasts (Dan. 7), then on earth, the province
of the two-horned beast (Rev. 13:10-18). His work,
therefore, starts in the Old Country, and should
include the very first truth that was disclosed from
the book of Daniel. All in all his message and power
prove to be world-wide -- land and sea.

thousand fold, and pestilence of all kinds

but we never had to spray any vegetation.

…in the realm of nature the storehouse (home) of the waters, is
therefore in the realm of symbols the birth-place of the nations --
the Old Country, the earth, the opposite of the sea, is
correspondingly a domain away from the Old Country. It is
located to John in the symbol of the two-horned beast's coming
up, not out of the sea, but "out of the earth" (Rev. 13:11), the
only place where trees naturally grow. And as according to
Daniel 4:20-22, trees are figurative of rulers, therefore the trees
in this instance represent "the ancient men...before the house"
(Ezek. 9:6) -- a fact which reveals that in this period, the church's
headquarters are in the two-horned beast's dominion -- the New
World, "the earth."

Rev. 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming
up out of the earth; and he had two horns like
a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
As the birthplace of the nations is
symbolized by the sea, then the "earth,"
the opposite of the "sea," locates the
domain of the two-horn beast away from
the Old Country. But to find exactly which
one of the New Country's governments it
stands for, we must consider the
characteristics of the beast itself.

THE USA
 The "earth," then, points to a place away from the "sea" and the
opposite of what sea stands for, -- a country made up of
inhabitants who have emigrated from elsewhere. The only such
country or nation away from the Old Country and as influential as
portrayed in this two-horned beast that arises after the
formation of the leopard-like beast, in the Protestant period, is
the United States. Moreover, the United States is already a world
power, and so we need not be guessing any more. The beast's
two horns point to its two political ruling powers -- Democrats
and Republicans. Their lamb-like character gives the appearance
of innocence, harmlessness, and charitability. The beast's
speaking like a dragon nevertheless repudiates the lamb-like
appearance of the horns.

…The subject of Nineveh, her
lengthened probation, and the
consequent grief of Jonah, was
presented to me as a parallel case
with our own disappointment of
1844.

 Now we may ask when did Jonah's message arrive in
America? -- Jonah's message was one to Nineveh
exclusively, and the only message to Nineveh today is
that contained in the Truth given in "War News
Forecast," tract No. 14. There is no other message to
Nineveh. And bear in mind that the church is not
Nineveh. The message in tract No. 14 shows to what age
God's people have come: It shows that the church has
now grown up in Truth and can become husbandmen,
rulers, etc., and that therefore the time has come that the
kingdom of Christ is to be set up. And the tract contains
the message to Nineveh. Symbolic Code, Vol. 11, No. 8 10 -11
 Seeing that the Lord is about to humiliate
"Assyria" for her own good, but that He
would forbear doing so if only she would
repent as did Nineveh of old at Jonah's
warning, obviously this Forecast is
published to benefit not the church alone
but "Assyria" and her allies also, and even
their enemy.

and upon thy father's house, days that have not come from the
day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
7:18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss
for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and
for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
7:19 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the
desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns,
and upon all bushes.
7:20 In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is
hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria,
the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the
beard.
 Isa 7:21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall
nourish a young cow, and two sheep;
7:22 And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they
shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one
eat that is left in the land.
7:23 And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place
shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand
silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
7:24 With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because
all the land shall become briers and thorns.
7:25 And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there
shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be
for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.
The Young Cow and the Two Sheep.
As butter is churned from milk, and as the milk from which this spiritual
"butter" is made, comes from the "two sheep" and the "young cow," the
truth flows forth that these three milk-producing creatures symbolize
three different sources from which the Word of the Lord (butter) is
obtained. The cow is young; the sheep are not. Accordingly, the
source of the butter, God's Word, represented by the young cow, is of
later origin than the sources represented by the two sheep. The two-
of-a-kind therefore can only represent the Old and New Testament
Scriptures; whereas the cow, being larger and younger than the sheep,
represents sacred volumes of correspondingly larger proportions and of
later origin than the Bible. These volumes manifestly are the latter-day
writings of the "Spirit of Prophecy" (Rev. 19:10), which enable their
patrons to "refuse the evil, and choose the good," and which bring to
them the Honey. Tract 6 29-30

"A Man Shall Nourish" Them.
Here the Lord tells us that the milking of the two sheep and the young
cow (the unfolding of the heaven-sent scrolls) is not entrusted to all, but
to "a man" (prophet). This means that the one through whom the light
is revealed, nourishes these sources of supply by arousing widespread
interest in them, thus keeping them alive and producing. And each one
who would remain in the land, must give them his steady patronage and
be on the alert, of course, to interest others in their lasting, life-giving
product. Scriptures, also that still others would doubt the Spirit of
Prophecy, God therefore calls attention to all three. The figures, "a
young cow and two sheep," unique in their milk-producing ability, make
clear that their product can sustain life for eternity, and that to the
"man" who nourishes them are the saints to go for their butter. Then
they shall know the difference between The Spirit of Prophecy and Its
Counterfeits. Tract 6 44- 45
A desperate confederacy will be formed
among those who are breaking the law of
God, and who are teaching others to
transgress its precepts. They will make
decrees to oppose God's commandment-
keeping people. " . . . Therefore thus saith the
Lord God of hosts, O My people that
dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the

What will be the
reason for the
great fear by
Assyria?
Zech 1:18 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and
behold four horns.
1:19 And I said unto the angel that talked with me,
What be these? And he answered me, These are the
horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
1:20 And the Lord showed me four carpenters.
1:21 Then said I, what come these to do? And he
spake, saying, these are the horns which have scattered
Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are
come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles,
which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to
Assyria
Babylon
Rome
To fully understand Zechariah chapter one,
verses eighteen through to verse twenty-one,
we will now use an analogy in order to
simplify what the prophet wrote. Let us say
that you have a man and his wife, whom we
will call Mr. and Mrs. HORN. This couple, Mr.
and Mrs. HORN has eight sons, all of whom
carry the last name HORN. In addition, all of
these eight sons are known to be aggressive,
warlike and dangerous.
However, over a period of time, four
of the sons decide that they are going
to change their name from HORN to
CARPENTER. Nevertheless, while the
four will change their name from
HORN to CARPENTER, their behavior
will still be aggressive, dangerous and
hornlike.
And as the prophet Zechariah predicted,
at some time in the near future, these
two set, the HORNS and the
CARPENTERS, are going to have a massive
fight with each other, in which the
CARPENTERS will rise up in dangerous
hornlike fashion, and will destroy the
HORNS, as carpenters would tear down
and destroy a building.
HORNS CARPENTERS
Plainly, the four metals of the great image
symbolize, as do the four beasts, a succession of
four kings in their respective periods. The feet
(right and left) of iron and clay obviously
represent two divisions of kings (rightists and
leftists) in a fifth period -- the time in which the
God of Heaven shall "set up a kingdom, which
shall never be destroyed." The toes of the feet,
indicate, of course, a multiplicity of kings in
both parties, the rightists and the leftists.
After having been shown the
symbolism of the four horns
and four carpenters, the
prophet's attention was turned
to another symbolism….

HORNS CARPENTERS
Obviously one part of the Gentile nations shall
come against the part that is in the Holy Land,
and chase them out to make room for God's
people. Then will the Lord's feet stand on
Mount Olives and the Mount shall cleave in the
midst thereof and make therein a very great
valley. Thus shall the Lord open the way for His
people to flee there to the "valley" where the
Lord's feet stand, and all the saints with them

 Here the same powers which scattered Judah and
Israel are again seen, not as horns, but as
carpenters; not to scatter God's people, but to build
for them, and to cast out the horns (powers) of the
Gentiles -- those who rule the land. Plainly, then,
on one hand the nations which do not rule Palestine
are to arise as "horns" against those who rule it, and
on the other hand they are to rise as carpenters for
the people of God. Thus will "the times of the
Gentiles be fulfilled." Lu. 21:24….

After the antitypical break-up of the unholy
church (Israel) and state (Syria) alliance occurred,
protestant principles and protestant governments
flourished. Christianity spread rapidly throughout
Europe and the new world. However, as time
progressed, there was a major separation among
the HORNS on the world scene, which led to
some of the HORNS being intent in having their
names changed to CARPENTERS.
Vladimir I was the prince of Kiev (who lived from AD. 956-1015), he was undoubtedly influenced
by his Christian grandmother and was baptized in the year 988, he led the Kievans and all Russia
to Christianity.

On September 1, 988, Vladimir gathered the citizens of Kiev on the banks of the
Dnieper River, and there they were all solemnly baptized. That year is considered
the official date of the Christian baptism of Russia. The establishment of the church
hierarchy was also accompanied by this baptism. Russia then officially became a
Christian nation and was so for hundreds of years.
Now in continuing with the subject of those who will eventually emerge as the CARPENTERS. It
should be made known that the chief nation of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics),
was once considered to be among the “most Christian” nations in the world. But that would
change, and the change was caused by the Bolshevik Revolution of Russia in 1917. This saw the
overthrow of the Government by Lenin and adaption of Communism. Lenin also made a
controversial decree in 1918, for the removal of the physical base of churches. Which saw the
government confiscating all church properties, including its places of worship, seminaries,
schools and bank accounts, by this act depriving the church of any legal status. Overnight the
Christian church as an institution ceased to exist. Lenin’s order on, May 1, 1919 read as follows:
“It is needed to get done with the priests and religion as soon as possible. Arrest the priests as
the enemies of revolution and saboteurs, execute them without mercy everywhere you spot
them. As many as you can, churches should be shut down. The cathedrals have to be sealed and
used as warehouses.” Lenin Then the next ruler was Joseph Stalin
The Soviet Union installed new communist governments
in Central and Eastern Europe following World War II. In
addition, the Russians indirectly backed the ascension of
totalitarian leaders in the Americas, Asia, the Middle East
and Africa. Pivotal to this policy was the Communist
International (also simply known as the Commintern),
which was formed with the intention of aiding and
assisting communist parties around the world, and of
taking power by fostering revolutions. This was one major
cause of tension during the Cold War, as the United States
and its military allies equated the global spread of
communism to Soviet expansionism by proxy.
The United States then decided to mobilize its economy for a long
contest with the Soviets; they built the hydrogen bomb and
strengthened the NATO alliance covering Western Europe. As a result,
the lines were permanently drawn between the communists and
totalitarian countries (those who will be the CARPENTERS), and the
democratic countries (the HORNS). This divide as we see today, is
getting wider and wider with each passing day.
Obvious it is, then, that to punish any
apostate and hypocritical Christian nation,
Heaven may send upon it the red scourge
of atheistic Communism (though the
Scriptures make certain that it is doomed
in the struggle for world supremacy for the
reason that its ungodly end is to blot
Christianity from the face of the earth).

Thus far is seen that the Assyria of this chapter represents a
people who have been well instructed in the things of God,
the law and the sanctuary…There is but one people under
the sun that answers to all these descriptions, and that
people is, of course, the English-speaking people, in whose
midst is the church, and from whose midst the Gospel and
the Bible flow out to all nations. As clear as language can
make it, the burden of the prophet Zephaniah is for the
English-speaking Christian world. God is now saying to
Assyria's capital city, "Indeed, you are doing all these
abominations, but you will not thus continue long. The time
is at hand." Put a stop to your absurdities.

Assyrian yoke from off their shoulders, are His
people, His church -- antitypical Judah… So it is
that while Nahum predicts liberation and peace
for God's faithful people, he predicts disaster and
humiliation for antitypical Assyria (the power
which they serve) and for the wicked in the

see that while Heaven and earth wearily wait
upon Christians to take the offensive against all
unrighteousness, the power of evil is exerting an
utterly sinister influence through Christless men

stark peril of it hurls its challenge at Christendom
as a whole. What shall we do about it? Close our
