DRYING AND IMPREGNATING EQUIPMENT
WITH LOW-FREQUENCY HEATING
FOR DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS

Introduction
The quality demands to the transformer suppliers for power transformers given by the network
operators are also those applied to the drying and insulation of distribution transformers today.
Also the requirements of the final customers to the manufacturing supervision and production
monitoring, especially when manufacturing distribution transformers have increased worldwide.
Hedrich has had a response to this and has continued their development in various equipment
technologies from purification of insulating liquids and drying and insulation and extended it to the
sections of power transformers in the medium voltage class and distribution transformers, setting
standards in quality, efficiency and safety.

Quality
In the range of medium-voltage power transformers Hedrich Vapour Phase plants with expansion
evaporator system and with thin-film evaporator as well s Hedrich Vacuum Plants with hot
nitrogen and current heating system are more and more used. For these applications, Hedrich
offers favourable equipment solutions that are also efficient for medium-voltage power transformer
suppliers. We will gladly submit to you as well a quotation for an individually adapted equipment
solution.

With the drying and impregnating plant with low-frequency heating, Hedrich does not only supply
a modern equipment solution for distribution transformers but also a drying quality that fits highest
demands. The high demands set on the drying quality for power transformers worldwide
nowadays and correspond to state-of-the-art technology are offered by Hedrich to their customer
with their most advanced vacuum drying and impregnating plant with low-frequency, even for the
drying of distribution transformers.

Average of winding temperature pre-drying ≥ 110 °C

Ultimate vacuum fine drying phase ≤ 0.5 mbar
Residual moisture in the insulation fine drying phase < 0.5 % percent per weight
Standard requirements to the drying quality for distribution transformers

State of the art drying qualities are final vacuum below of 0.2 mbar and average residual moisture
content in the insulation of less than < 0.3 % percent per weight.

Furthermore, not only the drying quality but also the quality of impregnation in a process can be
realized today with the modern Hedrich process technology.
The active parts of the distribution transformers are completely, with or without cover depending
on the design of the distribution transformers, installed into the transformer housing and
subsequently dried and impregnated by means of the Hedrich drying and impregnating
equipment. Depending on size and weight of the hygroscopic material like paper and pressboard
of the distribution transformers, openings of nominal width of DN40 to DN65 are sufficient for the
escaping water vapour from the insulation.
10 to 500 kVA DN40, 1 ½’’
500 kVA to 2,500 kVA DN50, 2‘’
2,500 kVA to 4,000 kVA DN65, 2 ½’’
Recommended openings of nominal widths

6 / 41
Expensive dry-gas flushing through the transformer to avoid condensation of water vapours
escaping from the insulation at the active part core and at the transformer housing is not at all
necessary when applying the Hedrich drying process. The complete drying and impregnating
process is effected under vacuum from beginning to end.

Heating-up and pre-drying phase 15 mbar to 20 mbar

Fine drying phase ≤ 0.2 mbar
Impregnating phase ≤ 0.5 mbar
Process pressures

With the process permanently under vacuum conditions, oxygen is evacuated from the process
from the beginning. The heating-up, pre-drying, temperature holding, fine drying and
filling/impregnating phases are operated under vacuum. An efficient vacuum pumping unit extracts
the water vapours escaping from the insulation during the heating-up and fine drying phase and
evacuates the distribution transformers even during impregnation. The insulation material is thus
spared and a low degradation of polymerisation of the cellulose insulation is ensured.

New absorption of moisture by the hygroscopic insulating materials like paper and pressboard is
thus avoided at any rate. Even after the process the re-humidification is prevented by
superimposing the active part or complete filling of the transformers by insulating oil.

After cooling down of the transformers to room temperature, they can immediately be transferred
to the test facility.

The quality of the drying and the lower stress of the insulation is characterized by the safe and
continuously monitored determination of the conductor temperature of the windings, the precise
measuring of heating voltage and current of each phase, the safety device against internal
electrical flashover, the overcurrent warning and interruption, the monitoring of synchronous run
and balance of the three phases as well as by the reduced depolymerization of the cellulose
insulation due to absence of oxygen in the process atmosphere and due to short drying cycles.

Efficiency
The batch times for a drying and impregnating process are reduced to 6 hours for an average
batch with three-phase distribution transformers including loading and unloading of the distribution
transformers in the vacuum tank. A cause for this is the direction of action of supplied process
heat and discharged moisture. With the electric low-frequency heating unit, the direct and
continuous heating of the connected distribution transformers is realized by supply of a regulated
low frequency current. This current with reduced frequency heats up the copper or aluminium
winding of the high-tension voltage side and the induction current the short-circuited winding of the
low-tension voltage side.

So the windings are the heat source in the active part whereby the insulation is heated up as well.
Consequently, the direction of action of the process heat is directed from the inside to the outside.
The heat source is located close to the moisture to be evaporated. The water vapour escape from
the winding is evacuated by the efficient and exactly adapted vacuum pumping unit. The direction
of action of the moisture transport is consequently from the inside to the outside. Because the
heat and moisture transport takes place in the same direction and optimally controlled process
guidance is ensured by Hedrich, short drying times can be realized.

7 / 41
The vacuum tanks are designed according to the customer’s requirements taking into account the
dimensions of the distribution transformers. A vacuum tank with a vertically moving upper part
(vacuum bell) and a stationary lower part proved to be the optimum design. The lifted bell permits
free access to the transformers for the connection of the low-frequency heating and the
transformer oil supply. The bottom of the vacuum bell comprises all connecting ports for vacuum,
transformer oil and for the electrical leadthroughs for heating and measuring. The leadthroughs for
the heating current are specially designed for use under vacuum conditions. The vacuum bell is
lifted by means of a wire rope hoist.

For transport of the distribution transformers, two roller conveyors are provided in the lower part.
Other means of transportation like trolley or air cushion are also possible.

The vacuum tank does not require a wall heating and heat insulation with covering as it is the
case with other drying processes because an accompanying heating of the vacuum tank for the
drying process is not necessary with the Hedrich drying technology.

The vacuum bell has repeatedly proved to be an economically attractive construction because it
imposes lower requirements in terms of fabrication, setup and transportation costs to the final
erection site than other tank designs.

Example of a vacuum bell with two roller conveyors

The full capacity and highest economic efficiency of the equipment is achieved if two vacuum bells
are operated sequentially. While the heating and pre-drying phase is running in one vacuum tank,
the fine vacuum phase takes place and the transformers are filled with insulating oil in the other
tank.
For parallel operation on two vacuum tanks only one low-frequency heating system is needed,
that is switched on the first or the second tank, depending on the process phase. This allows
increasing the utilization rate of the low-frequency heating and achieving better equipment
profitability.
The Hedrich low-frequency heating consists of several low-frequency heating units offering
besides the high degree of capacity utilization, large production flexibility in batch occupancy.
Each low-frequency heating can be connected to one distribution transformer in individual
operation or to at least two and at maximum three distribution transformers in parallel operation. In

8 / 41
parallel operation are distribution transformers with identical electrical properties like nominal
power and voltage, same phase number, switching group, short circuit voltage and same winding
construction.

Production schedule in parallel operation on 2 vacuum tanks I and II

The number of distribution transformers in parallel operation is individually adapted to the diversity
of types according to the customer’s requirements in order to ensure high equipment profitability
and flexibility.

Due to the sinusoidal/sine wave-form heating currents and the precise measurement technology
and data evaluation used, the Hedrich LF heating units determine online continuously without
interrupting the heating process, the winding temperatures of the connected windings of a trans-
former with high accuracy even for low heating frequencies.

An interruption of the heating process for measuring the winding temperature is not necessary
with the Hedrich online LF heating device.

With equal drying batch and equal equipment capacity, the energy consumption is reduced by at
least 70 % and up to 94 % with the modern Hedrich process technology using low frequency
heating compared with conventional drying processes like hot air re-circulating drying (hot air
drying) since the vacuum tank is not heated, the core is only slightly heated, there is no heat loss
of heated vacuum ovens and vacuum pumps have short running times.

This results in extremely short drying times. The drying period only takes approx. 25 % compared
to the conventional hot air re-circulating drying and the state of the art of the design of equipment
parts and of the control of the process.

Safety
Process and production safety today includes a broad spectrum ranging from equipment reliability
and operating safety against unintended input of wrong parameters and process cycles to process
data logging and electronic archiving of process data.

The equipment reliability is ensured by Hedrich because tested and reliable equipment parts and
hardware components are used by avoiding products with increased failure frequency and
applying intelligent and tailored component solutions.

Furthermore the safe process sequence, data logging and evaluation as well as user friendliness
are ensured by Hedrich by the controller to be programmed by means of microprocessor and PC
visualization. Input, storage, output and registration of the data and switchover conditions required
for process guidance and for certification of production (DIN, EN, ISO), the possibility of showing
special process parameters in case of anomalies, possibility for switching off in case of
emergencies and possibility for intervention by means of modem or internet VPN connection by
our specialists worldwide or by our head office Hedrich Ehringshausen-Katzenfurt in Germany.

Moreover we offer solutions for automatic data collection by means of barcode scanner and
terminal as well as database query of the transformer data relevant for the process.

Automatic electronic drawing up of drying reports and process trends as well as safe archiving on
external data bases in company networks also belongs to our solutions for the Hedrich vacuum
drying and impregnating equipment with low frequency heating.

The Hedrich process control monitors the complete drying and impregnating process and re-
gulates each LF heating device individually depending on the connected transformer type and the
heating progress.
The hardware components used on the LF heating devices allow a precise control of the
sinusoidal/sine wave-form heating currents ensuring, jointly with the precise measuring tech-
nology, a high accuracy in measuring the required data like current and voltage of each winding.
The especially developed evaluation calculation of the measured data together with the
transformer data allow a high precision of the determination of the individual winding temperatures
and for all transformer types.

10 / 41
The safety device against internal electrical flashover, overcurrent warning and interruption,
monitoring of synchronous run of the winding phases of three-phase transformers as well as the
reduced depolymerisation of the cellulose insulation due to reduction of oxygen in the process
atmosphere and short process cycles are constituents of the modern Hedrich process technology.
The result is a careful heating and drying as well as the safety of the production “Drying and
Insulation” of distribution transformers.

DRYING AND IMPREGNATING EQUIPMENT
WITH LOW-FREQUENCY HEATING
FOR DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS

Process description
Preparatory work
The transformers including housing with or with no lid are ready mounted. The transformers to be
treated are moved into the vacuum tank (1.1) by means of roller conveyor, trolley or air cushion
and connected to the appropriate filling hoses depending on the oil type and the filling level mo-
nitoring device (LA+1.1.1 to LA+1.1.4). The low voltage windings have to be short circuited by
means of a short circuit copper bar and the high voltage windings have to be connected to the
low-frequency current supply.

After the transformer data have been entered and the process data have been pre-selected ma-
nually by means of PC visualization, the automatic process can be started by the operator.

If requested, the input of transformer data and pre-selection of process data is also possible
according to the customer’s requirements by means of barcode scanner with terminal and auto-
matic data base query of the transformer data from the data base in the company network.
Hedrich will be pleased to offer a suitable individually adapted solution.

Heating-up and pre-drying

After the automatic program has been started by the operator, the control system first performs a
safety routine in which, prior to the start of the heating process, the heating system and the
connected transformers are tested and the measured values of each winding are compared with
the input data of the transformers.

The vacuum pumping unit (sub-assembly group 31) evacuates the vacuum tank (1.1) and the
active parts in the transformer housing to less than 20 mbar and to more than 15 mbar (Paschen
law).

The transformer windings are heated up to an adjustable upper limit temperature by supply of
energy from the electrical current supply. The necessary heating of the windings with the insula-
tions to be dried is reached in the high voltage winding by direct current supply, in the low voltage
winding this is done by means of an appropriate induction current. The heat generated by the cur-
rent is directly transmitted into the conductor and coil insulation. A heat flow is produced from
inside the oils towards the outside. The temperature is calculated continuously from the heating
capacity supplied. Due to the inner heating and external vacuum, the same flow direction of heat
and water vapour is reached to effectively drying of the insulation.

This results in extremely short drying times. The drying period only takes approx. 25 % compared
to the conventional hot air re-circulating drying. Only the windings are heated. The transformer
core and the transformer housing remain cold with this process. Compared with the conventional
hot air re-circulating process, this means a reduction by at least 70 % and up to 94 %.

12 / 41
With increasing winding temperature and changing resistance of the copper or aluminium winding,
the heating capacity is continuously reduced to avoid that the set temperature is exceeded by
some degrees Kelvin.

The temperature of the winding is then constantly kept at set temperature until all transformers,
depending on the loading of the vacuum tank (1.1) with different types and sizes, have reached
the set temperature. After the short dwell time, the fine drying is started.

Fine drying
When the pre-selected set temperature of the windings is reached, the full pumping speed of the
vacuum pumping unit takes effect by connection of the roots pump (31.15). The temperature of
the unheated windings drops very little due to the already low moisture content and the extremely
low heat loss by “vacuum insulation”. When the pressure falls below 0.5 mbar, the standard and a
sufficient drying degree of less than 0.5 percent by weight is reached already. State of the art
drying qualities are final vacuum below of 0.2 mbar and average residual moisture content in the
insulation of less than < 0.3 % percent per weight.

Typical process sequence during drying and filling of distribution transformers

Impregnation
After the drying process the transformers are impregnated and filled with insulating oil under va-
cuum. The filling level monitoring is preferential sensory by means of a filling level sensor
(LA+1.1.1 to LA+1.1.4) at the transformer.

Due to the continuous drying and filling process under vacuum, the insulation cannot take up moi-
sture again. There are no fumes or pollution of the work area and no need for expensive cleaning
of the transformers.

13 / 41
When the transformers have cooled down, the missing oil due to volume shrinkage and thoroughly
impregnation will be re-filled outside the vacuum equipment.

The advantages of this drying process can only be fully utilized if both drying and filling of the
transformers can be performed in one continuous vacuum process without breaks for retightening.
Possibilities for that are given by the winding design, foil winding of the low-voltage side, keeping
of equal lengths for high and low voltage windings, use of Prepreg elements and flexible
supporting profiles as well as the use of pre-dried laminated wood or even eliminating
compressible, hygroscopic insulating elements completely.

Our specialists for transformer construction will be pleased to provide support.
