Note: Time allowed 45 mn. Problems 1 & 2 are mandatory. Solve 2 problems among problems
3, 4 & 5. Use 3 significant digits in your final answers.
1.(17.5 points) A control rod made of yellow brass must not stretch more than 3 mm when the tension in
the wire is 4 kN. Given: E = 105 GPa and that the maximum allowable normal stress is 187 MPa.
Determine the smallest diameter rod that should be used.

2.(17.5 points) The block shown is made of a magnesium alloy, for which E = 45 GPa and v =
0.35. Know that σx = −180 MPa and σy = − 63 MPa. Determine the corresponding change in the
volume of the block.

Pb#2 Pb#3
3. (35 points) Each of the four vertical links connecting the two rigid horizontal members is
made of aluminum (E = 70 GPa) and has a uniform rectangular cross section of 10 × 40 mm.
Take P = 29 kN. Determine the deflection of point E.
4.(35 points) A polystyrene rod consisting of two cylindrical portions AB and BC is restrained at both
ends and supports two 5-kip loads as shown. Take E = 0.45 × 106 psi. Determine the reactions
at A and C.

Pb#4 Pb#5
5. (35 points) A rod consisting of two cylindrical portions AB and BC is restrained at both ends.
Portion AB is made of steel (Es = 200 GPa and αs = 11.7 × 10-6/°C) and portion BC is made of brass
(Eb = 105 GPa and αb = 20.9 × 10-6/°C). Knowing that the rod is initially unstressed, determine the
compressive force induced in ABC when there is a temperature rise of 40°C.
