NATIONAL RATING SYSTEM

An evaluation tool to help design, build, operate, and

maintain a resource-efficient built environment.
i. GRIHA is an acronym for – “Green Rating for Integrated
Habitat Assessment.”
ii. GRIHA is a rating tool that helps people assesses the performance of their
building against certain nationally acceptable benchmarks. It evaluates
the environmental performance of a building holistically over its entire life
cycle, thereby providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a
‘green building’.

SIGNIFICANCE OF GRIHA
i. Environmental Performance
ii. Energy Efficiency
iii. Water Conservation
iv. Sustainable Site Selection
v. Material Selection and Waste Management
vi. Indoor Environmental Quality
vii. Awareness and Education
viii. Sustainable Development Goals
BUILDING PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION
i. Integrated building planning and construction maximizes
environmental benefits.
ii. Appropriate interventions lead to reduced demand for depletable resources
and efficient resource utilization.

CRITERIONS
CREDIT 10 - REDUCE LANDSCAPE WATER REQUIREMENT
CREDIT 11 - REDUCE THE WATER USE BY THE BUILDING
CREDIT 12 - EFFICIENT WATER USE DURING CONSTRUCTION
CREDIT 10 - REDUCE LANDSCAPE WATER REQUIREMENT
AIM - To reduce the landscape water requirement to minimize the
ii
load on the municipal water supply and depletion of groundwater.
SOLUTIONS –
i. Design with water efficiency in mind: Opt for drought-tolerant
plants that require less water. Arrange plants with similar water
requirements together, creating hydrazones. This prevents
overwatering or underwatering

ii. Efficient irrigation systems: Install smart irrigation systems that utilize
weather data and soil moisture sensors to deliver water. Drip
irrigation or micro-irrigation systems can target the root zones of iii
plants, minimizing water loss through evaporation and runoff.
Adjust irrigation schedules based on seasonal weather conditions
to avoid unnecessary watering.

iii. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around plants and in garden

beds to reduce evaporation, control weed growth. Ex. such as
wood chips or straw, can help retain moisture in the soil.

AIM - To reduce the landscape water requirement to minimize the
load on the municipal water supply and depletion of groundwater.
vi
SOLUTIONS –
iv. Regular maintenance: Maintain proper plant health by removing
weeds, and regularly inspecting for pests or diseases. Healthy
plants are more efficient in water usage and require less irrigation.

v. Rainwater harvesting: Implement rainwater collection systems to

capture and store rainwater from rooftops or other surfaces.
iv
vi. Use of Fly ash as Replacement to Cement in Concrete: In
hardscape Concrete mix containing Fly ash requires less water
and provides better workability at same water content.

vii. Education and awareness: Educate homeowners or occupants

about water-efficient landscaping practices and encourage
responsible water use. Provide guidelines and tips on proper
watering techniques, plant selection, and maintenance.

GRAPE COUNTRY RESORT Nashik

5 STAR RATING
CREDIT 11 - REDUCE THE WATER USE BY THE BUILDING
AIM - To reduce water consumption in the building.
SOLUTIONS –
i. Rainwater Harvesting- Rainwater is collected from the
rooftops, deposited in a reservoir with filtration. Once
the water is purified, it is can be used for cultivation,
gardening, and other domestic uses.

ii. Grey Water Recycling Treatment of greywater-

• Filtering
• Settlement of solids
• Flotation and separation of lighter solids
• Aerobic or anaerobic digestion
• Chemical or UV disinfection
• Irrespective of the treatment such water is never safe
to drink but can be used for flushing toilets, washing
clothes and irrigation purposes. One of the major
benefits of recycling greywater is that it is a huge
source with a low concentration of organic matter.

AIM - To reduce water consumption in the building.
SOLUTIONS –
iii. Pressure Reduction - Pressure reducing valves are being very
commonly installed in high rise residential and commercial
buildings to help to maintain a consistent water pressure.
These higher pressures, water flows through the system with
greater flow through fixtures beyond rated flow capacities,
this additional water is wasted and it serves no extra benefit
to the required performance.

iv. Smart irrigation systems - Water used for irrigation alone

counts for at least 75% of water consumption in India. Drip
irrigation is a method that can be used to send water directly
to plants through pipes that are buried under the surface. This
method can be used to avoid excess watering of plants thus
reducing the use of water.

AIM - To reduce water consumption in the building.
SOLUTIONS –
v. Low-Flow Plumbing Fixtures - Low-flow plumbing
fixtures like faucets, shower heads, and toilets are
used to reduce the excess use of water. Large
quantities of water are saved by the use of
plumbing fixtures which are designed to operate
with less water.

vi. Cooling Towers Green - Buildings make use of

evaporative cooling systems to save on energy,
which use water for cooling. Keeping in mind the
huge need to conserve water, the water used in
such cooling towers is non-potable water and the
same is not drained out but recycled time and
again and reused.

CREDIT 12 - EFFICIENT WATER USE DURING CONSTRUCTION
AIM - To minimize use of potable water during construction activity.
SOLUTIONS –
i. Plan and design: Incorporate water-efficient features and
technologies into the initial design phase. Consider factors such
as site layout, building orientation, and landscaping to optimize
water use.
ii. Use low-flow fixtures: Install low-flow faucets, toilets, and
showerheads in construction site facilities to reduce water
consumption.
iii. Recycle and reuse water: Implement systems for capturing,
treating, and reusing water on-site. For example, collect
rainwater and use it for tasks such as site cleaning, dust
suppression, and irrigation.
iv. Optimize landscaping: Utilize efficient irrigation systems, such as
drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to the roots,
minimizing evaporation and runoff. utilize efficient irrigation
systems, such as drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to

AIM - To minimize use of potable water during construction
activity.
SOLUTIONS –
v. Control runoff: Implement erosion control measures to prevent
sediment runoff from construction sites.
vi. Monitor and detect leaks: Regularly inspect the construction
site for leaks and promptly repair any damaged or
malfunctioning water equipment.
vii. Educate and train workers: Provide training and raise
awareness among construction workers about the importance
of water conservation and efficient water use practices.
viii. Collaborate with suppliers: Choose materials and equipment
that have minimal water requirements during manufacturing
processes.
ix. Monitor water usage: Install water meters to track and monitor
water usage on-site.
x. Use materials such as pre-mixed concrete for preventing water
loss during mixing Control the wasting of curing water.
