The designers and developers of the Canvas website have satisfied several high-level principles of HCI,

such as:

• Visibility: The website makes its functions and features visible to the user, so that they can see
what they can do and what the system is doing. A good example of visibility is the navigation
menu, which allows the user to access different sections of the website, such as dashboard,
courses, groups, calendar, inbox, history, and help. The navigation menu also shows the user
which section of the website they are currently on, by highlighting it with a white background.
Another example of visibility is the side panel, which allows the user to access different parts of
the course, such as home, modules, announcements, people, grades, and collaborations. The
side panel also shows the user which part of the course they are currently on, by highlighting it
with a line.
• Consistency: The website maintains consistency in the design and behavior of its elements, and
it also conforms to similar systems and standard conventions. A good example of consistency is
the color scheme, which uses green and white as the main colors. These colors are used
throughout the website to indicate different types of information and actions, such as links,
buttons, notifications, and grades. Another example of consistency is the font style, which uses a
unique font for the text. These fonts are used throughout the website to provide readability and
clarity for the content.

• Familiarity: The website uses language and symbols that are familiar to the user, or that help
them transfer their existing knowledge to the website domain. A good example of familiarity is
the terminology, which uses words that are common in educational settings, such as modules,
assignments, grades, and discussions. These words help the user understand the purpose and
function of each section of the website. Another example of familiarity is the icons, which use
images that are related to the content or action that they represent, such as a pencil for editing,
a trash can for deleting, a lock for locking, and a star for favoriting. These icons help the user
recognize what they can do on the website.
