“The Farmers by FERNANDO AMORSOLO”

The painting portrays a group of farmers working on their farm. This is a nice and
beautiful painting because it depicts the lives of Filipinos and the majestic Mayon Volcano in the
background. The farmers wear a traditional Filipino dress which depicts the Filipino customs and
character as embedded in rural agricultural settings. There were four men working in the field
with one man holding a carabao and the others planting or harvesting rice. Fernando Amorsolo
wants us to understand the traditional Filipino pastoral work as well as the traditional Filipino
customs depicted in the artwork during his time.

“The Spolarium by JUAN LUNA”

H

The painting features a glimpse of Roman history focused on the bloodshed brought by

gladiatorial matches. For me the artwork is a representation of how the Filipino suffered during
the Spanish colonization. Also the painting portrays mourning, pain, sadness and suffering
against the colonizers. Overall Juan Luna emphasizes the cruelty done by the Spaniards
against abuse of human rights. The artists reminds us of how important freedom is, to fight for
our freedom as a nation and the importance of equality in our society as well as the respect for
everyone that we must acquire.
