“Planting Rice” by Fernando Amorsolo (1949)

A new surge of nationalism in Filipino society was inspired by the arrival of American
colonists, and Fernando Amorsolo's art best exemplifies this. Images of traditional folk
settings were frequently used in the artwork of the time to convey an idealized sense of
national identity.
Amorsolo depicted scenes from everyday life in the Philippines in his themes. Images of
Filipinos engaging in popular pastimes and traditions as well as in labor-intensive jobs
like farming were featured.
We can clearly see the attitude and values of the Filipinos in this painting, we can see
how hardworking they are and how dedicated they are. Us filipinos are well known when
it comes to our rice production because of the fact that it is most likely the jobs of
filipinos back then.
This painting gives a positive impact to all Filipinos because its trying to say that, we
came from our ancestors that are very hard working and has this independency and
courage to fight for themselves after all the hardship that they’ve been through their life.
