All the world's ways were altered.

pyaare se chehare pe biiki biiki jo zulfen

The locks of hair scattered over her lovely face;

to aisa lagta tha jaise ghumar ke piichhe

it seemed like behind that cloud-like mass

ek os men ghula hu'aa phuul khila hai

suffused with dewdrops, a flower bloomed.

jaise baadal men ek chaand chupa hai

Like a moon hidden in a cloud,

aur chaandna aa rahaa hai

and the moonlight emerging

jaise raat kii parde men ek savera hai roshan roshan

like luminscent dawn from the shade of night:
 aankhon men sapnon ka saagar
an ocean of dreams in her eyes,

jis ne prem sitaaron kii chaadar jaise chhalak rahii hai laharo.n laharo.n
love overflowing in waves, like a sheet of stars,

baat kar rahii jaise moti barse

speaking words like showers of pearls,

jaise kahiin chaand kii paayal guunje

like somewhere the moon's anklets jingle,

jaise kahiin shiishe ke jaam kii re aur chham

Like a tinkling glass goblet.

se tuutii jaise koii chipke sitaar bajaa'e

or the playing of sitaar and flute,

jaise koii chaandanii raat men gaa'e

like singing in a moonlit night,

jaise koii haule se raaz sunaa'e

like the soft speaking of a secret.

kaisii miithii baaten thiin vo

What words they were,

kaisii mulaaqaaten thiin vo

what meetings they were!

jab main ne na jaana tha nazaron se kaise bigarte hain dil

When I didn't know how a heart could be destroyed by someone's gaze,

aur aarzuu paana hai kaisii manzil

and what sort of goal it is to obtain one's desire,

aur kaisii utarta hai chaand zamiin par

and how a moon can come down to earth,

kaisii kabhii lagta hai swarg kii andherii hai to bastii yahiin par
and how, sometimes, it can seem that the darkness of heaven settles right here.

usne bataaya mujhe aur samjhaaya mujhe

She told me, she explained to me:

ham jo mile hain hamen aise hii milna tha

we who meet, were destined to meet like this;

ham jo khile hain hamen aise hii khilna tha

we who bloom, were destined to bloom like this;

janmon ke bandhan janmon ke rishte hain

the bonds of many births, the relationships of many births:

jo bhii hamdam na to ham yuunhii milte hain

we're soulmates, so we meet like this.

kaanon men mere jaise shahad se ghule lage

This flowed into my ears like honey;

khwaabon ke marm jaise aankhon men dhule lage

it washed into my eyes like the meaning of my dreams.

How beautiful was that world of dreams, how splendid

khwaabon kii duniya jo kahane ko thii par kahiin bhii nahiin thii
what what the world of dreams had to say! But in reality, it didn't exist.

khwaab jo biite merii aankhen jo khulii mere hosh jo aa'e mujhe

The dreams passed, my eyes opened, my wits returned;

main ne dekha main ne jaana voh to kabhii aaya tha

I saw, I knew, the one who'd sometimes come.

nazaron pahachaaya tha dil men samaaya tha

I recognized her, I fixed her in my heart.

tha bhii chuka aur dil men rahe ab tanha tanha

and now my heart shall stay lonely, lonely.

na to koii armaan hai na koii tamanna hai

I know neither desire nor longing;

ab na koii sapna hai

no longer have I any dreams.
