Foreword

This British Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISE/12. It

supersedes BS 7668:1994, which is withdrawn.
This revision of BS 7668 aligns the delivery requirements of hot finished
structural hollow sections in weather resistant steels with co-existing standard
BS EN 10210-1 for hot finished structural hollow sections of non-alloy and fine
grain steels.
This publication does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users are responsible for its correct application.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
from legal obligations.

1 Scope
This British Standard specifies the technical delivery requirements for weldable weather resistant steels
for general structural and engineering purposes in the form of hot finished hollow sections of circular,
square or rectangular form. It also applies to hollow sections formed hot with or without subsequent heat
treatment or formed cold with subsequent heat treatment to obtain equivalent metallurgical conditions to
those obtained in the hot formed product. However, in the case of hollow sections formed from plate and
with the seams metal arc welded, this standard covers only the requirements for the plate material.
The products are equally suitable for bolted and riveted structures. The products specified in this British
Standard are intended for use in construction. Requirements for tolerances, dimensions and sectional
properties are specified in BS EN 10210-2.
NOTE Two material grades are specified in this standard and the user should select the grade appropriate to the intended use and
service conditions. The grades and mechanical properties are compatible with those in BS EN 10155.
This British Standard does not apply to products covered by BS EN 10025, BS EN 10113 (all parts),
BS EN 10155, BS EN 10210-1, BS EN 10219-1, BS EN 10219-2 and BS EN 10225.
In addition to the definitive requirements, this standard also requires the items detailed in Clause 4 to be
documented. For compliance with this standard, both the definitive requirements and the documented
items have to be satisfied.

NOTE 2 For quality assurance requirements see BS EN 10021.
--`,,`,,``,,`,``,,,,`````,,,`-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

NOTE 3 Assessed capability. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of quality system assessment
and registration against the appropriate standard in the BS EN ISO 9000 series by an accredited third-party certification body.

6.4 Chemical composition

6.4.1 The ladle analysis reported by the steel producer shall apply and shall conform to the requirements
of Table A.1.
Where product analysis is required, limits applicable to the product analysis shall be as specified
in Table 1 [see 4.3a) and 4.3b)].
6.4.2 When a carbon equivalent value (CEV) is required it shall be calculated from the ladle analysis using
equation (1):

Mn Cr + Mo + V Ni + Cu
CEV = C + + + (1)
6 5 15
The carbon equivalent value (CEV) shall conform to the requirements of Table A.2.
NOTE See 4.3b).

6.5 Mechanical properties

6.5.1 Under the inspection and testing conditions as specified in Clause 7 and in the delivery condition as
specified in 6.2 the mechanical properties shall conform to the requirements of Table A.3.
NOTE Stress relief annealing at more than 580 °C or for over 1 h might lead to deterioration of the mechanical properties. If the

6.6 Weldability
General requirements for welding of the hollow sections specified in this British Standard shall be as given
in BS EN 1011-1 and BS EN 1011-2.
NOTE 1 With increasing product thickness, increasing strength level and increasing carbon equivalent level, the occurrence of cold
cracking in the welded zone forms the main risk. Cold cracking is caused by the following factors in combination:
— the amount of diffusible hydrogen in the weld metal;
— a brittle structure of the heat affected zone;
— significant tensile stress concentrations in the welded joint.
NOTE 2 When using recommendations given, for example in BS EN 1011-1, BS EN 1011-2 or any other relevant standard, the
recommended welding conditions and the various welding ranges of the steel grades can be determined depending on the product
thickness, the applied welding energy, the design requirements, the electrode efficiency, the welding process and the weld metal
properties.
NOTE 3 If weather resistant steels are to be used unpainted, it is necessary to select welding consumables which achieve at least
equivalent weathering properties of the permanently exposed surfaces.

6.7 Surface condition

6.7.1 The hollow sections shall have a smooth surface corresponding to the manufacturing method used;
bumps, cavities or shallow longitudinal grooves resulting from the manufacturing process can be present,
provided the thickness is within tolerance.
Where surface defects are removed by the manufacturer by grinding the thickness of the hollow section
after the repair shall not be less than the minimum permissible thickness.
NOTE Thickness tolerances are given in BS EN 10210-2.

6.7.2 The ends of the hollow section shall be cut nominally square to the axis of the product.
6.7.3 For hollow sections manufactured by a welded process, repair of the weld shall be permitted.
6.7.4 For hollow sections manufactured by either a seamless or welding process, repair of the surface
defects to the body of the hollow section which are greater than those permitted in 6.7.1 shall be by welding
unless otherwise specified.
NOTE See 4.3d).
The conditions under which, and the extent to which, welding repair to the body can be carried out shall be
agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser [see 4.2a)].
6.7.5 Welding repair shall be carried out by operators qualified in accordance with BS EN 287-1. Welding
procedures shall be in accordance with BS EN ISO 15607 and BS EN 288-2 and BS EN 288-3.
NOTE Welding repair procedures should be specified in the manufacturers’ quality assurance system.

6.8 Non-destructive testing of welds

The seam weld of all welded hollow sections shall be subjected to non-destructive testing in accordance
with 9.4.
6.9 Tolerances and mass
6.9.1 Tolerances
Tolerances for hollow sections shall conform to BS EN 10210-2.

NOTE It is permissible for one individual value to be below the specified value, provided that it is not less than 70 % of that value.
b) If the conditions specified in a) are not satisfied then an additional set of three test pieces shall be
taken from the same sample and tested in accordance with BS EN 10002-1. The results of these tests
shall meet the following requirements.
1) The average value of six tests shall be equal to or greater than the value specified in Table A.3.
2) Not more than two of six individual values shall be lower than the value specified in Table A.3.
3) Not more than one of the six individual values shall be lower than 70 % of the value specified
in Table A.3.
c) If, when re-tested, the sample products do not conform to 1) to 3) then further tests shall be carried out
on the remainder of the test unit in accordance with 9.5.
9.3 Visual inspection and dimensional check
9.3.1 Visual inspection
The hollow sections shall be visually inspected for conformance to 6.7.
9.3.2 Dimensional check
The dimensions of the hollow sections shall conform to BS EN 10210-2.

9.4.3 For submerged arc welded sections, the weld seam of hollow sections shall be tested to level U4 in
accordance with BS EN 10246-9.
NOTE Butt welds used to join lengths of flat rolled-strip/plate together in the spiral submerged arc weld process can be used,
provided that the butt weld is tested to the same type of procedure and meets the same acceptance level, as specified in 9.4.2b), as the
main weld seam.

9.5 Re-tests, sorting and reprocessing

Products to be re-tested shall be sorted and reprocessed in accordance with BS EN 10021.

10 Marking
10.1 Except as provided for in 10.2 for hollow sections which are bundled, each hollow section shall be
marked by suitable and durable methods such as painting, stamping, adhesive labels or attached tags
[see 4.3e)] with the following:
— the number of this standard BS 7668:1);
— the designation;
— the manufacturers name or trademark;
— in the case of specific inspection and testing an identification number, e.g. order number, which
permits the correlation of the product or delivery unit to the related document.
10.2 Where the products are supplied bundled, the marking required in 10.1 can be on a label, which shall
be securely attached to the bundle.
