Actual Situation (What Is):
Learning to read is not an easy task. It is a complex process,
and such, is affected by number of considerations or factors
whose presence or absence would make or break a child in
course of learning. These factors must be treated as basic
ingredients for they have an important role to play in
teaching and learning of reading (Alejandro Bernardo,
Developmental Reading 1).

The Ideal Situation (What Should Be):

Filipinos are not fond of reading. They prefer watching
television, listening to radio and browsing smart phones but
not reading. Filipinos are also fond of talking or
storytelling. In short, Filipinos have poor attitude towards
reading.

Discrepancy:
Factors influencing the acquisition of the reading ability
vary from physical to clinical, societal, environmental and
home. The acquisition of reading ability may depend on the
factors revolving it. Either way, it will affect the child’s
ability in learning how to read.

What Is Known About the Problem:

Andersen (1998) described that skilled reading is
constructive, fluent, strategic, motivated, and lifelong
pursuit. Learning to reason about written material using
knowledge from everyday life and from disciplined fields of
study is constructive. Fluency is the mastery of the basic
processes to the point where they are automatic so the
attention is freed from analysis of meaning.

Question/s that remain unanswered:

1. What are the major factors influencing the acquisition of
reading performance?
