11 Material specification

11.1 Light gauge cold-formed steel

The walls panels are all made up of roll-formed cold rolled steel sections of thickness 54mil and
68mil that comply with ASTM A1003 and C955 of Structural Grade of 50 ksi. Below Sections are
going to be used for wall/Header as per design:
600S200-97 mil
600S200-68 mil
600S200-54mil
600T125-54 mil

There may also be Box CFS beams used for the project that will follow SSMA standards. The steel
is hot-dipped galvanized with a minimum Z180 coating for load bearing applications and Z120 for
non-load bearing applications. Alternately, the steel hot-dipped in Alum/Zinc coating also known
as Galvalume (with 55% Aluminum and 45% Zinc) is also used. The applicable codes are ASTM
A653 for galvanized and ASTM A792 for galvalume.

The light gauge cold-formed steel structural members are designed as per LRFD- AISI-2007.
The load of the structure and load imposed on the structure confirm to ASCE 7-16.

13 Criteria and Approach for Design of Framing for Gravity Loads

13.1 Design of Roof framing

NA

13.2 Headers
Headers are placed over the openings and it is subjected to only roof load. The roof load is
transferred to headers through roof joists. Headers are checked in bending, shear and
deflection. For headers in the bearing walls, steel sections are used which are designed for
bending, shear & deflection. Headers shall be webbed headers of depth as indicated.

13.3 Load Bearing Wall Studs

These studs are provided at the load-bearing walls and shall be designed as compression
members by ‘elastic theory of design’. These studs support the framing joist and are designed
for the reaction of the joist. The point load from the bearing wall stud of any floor to the stud of
floor beneath at the same location shall also be considered in the design. These studs are of
light gauge structural steel.
Lateral and wind pressure to be resisted using concreting over the wall panels.

13.4 Non-Load Bearing Wall Studs

These studs are provided at the non-load-bearing wall and shall be designed as a compression
member by ‘elastic theory of design’. These studs shall be designed for the nominal loads from
the joist by considering the joist parallel to the wall and designed for 10 PSF lateral load for
interior walls and wind loads for the exterior walls. These studs are of light gauge structural
steel.

13.5 Lateral design

17.6 Bridging Design and Anchorage Calculation

Maximum wall/stud height = 9 ft

Maximum Total Load = 8256 lb/ft (for Basement floor load Internal Wall-A)

Load per stud (16” O.C.) = 8256 x 1.33 = 10980 lb = 10.98 kip

Bridging height = 4.5 ft

Design Attachment of Stud to CRC bridging (2” wide & 54 mil thick) on both sides to Transfer 2%
of axial load into bridging

2% of axial load (10.98 kips) = 220 lbs

Load required = 220 lbs

Use TSN Bridgeclip, BC600 bridging connector

Allowable load = 360 lb > 322.5 lb OK.

Determine Anchorage Requirements

Considering Axial Compression Capacity of U channel (CRC) 150U50-54 (50ksi) is 2.320 kips

Axial Tension Capacity of U channel (CRC) 150U50-54 (50ksi) is less of

Td1= 2xAg Fy/ (Ω x1.67) = 2x0.13x50 / 1.67 = 7.78 lbs

Or

Td2= 2xAn Fu/(Ω x 2.0) = 2x0.10948 x 65 /2 = 7.11 kips, governs tension capacity.

Since compression capacity will govern, 2320/220 = 10.55 studs

Using 6 studs in compression, 6 studs in tension; anchorage required every 12

studs

12 studs = 15.96’ of wall length

At the anchorage location, the bridging force = 220 x 12 = 2640 lbs.

Design 9’ stud for anchoring the bridging with a 2640 lb point load at 4.5’

Moment in Stud, M = PL/4 = 2640 x 9 /4 = 5940 lb-ft

Shear in Stud, V = P/2 = 2640 /2 = 1320 lbs

Use (2) 600S200-68, 50 ksi, non-perforated stud

Allowable Moment Ma = 4896 lb-ft

Allowable Shear Va = 12240 lb

Allowable moment/shear based on lateral torsional bracing at 4.5’ (i.e 53”) o.c.

Design the connection of the anchor stud, 600S200-68, to the bridging row

Force required per stud, P = 2640 lb

-Attachment of Clip to each Stud

Capacity of weld connection = 1817 lb/in x 2 in = 3634 lb > 2640 lb

Provide min. 2’’ length of weld to connect web of stud to flange of CR channel.

Design the connection of the stud to floor system at bottom

Force required in each stud, P = 2640/2 = 1320 lbs

Capacity of weld connection = 1817 lb/in x 1 in = 1817 lb > 1320 lb

Provide min. 1’’ length of weld to connect stud to bottom floor.

-Design anchorage to floor system assuming concrete f’c = 4000 psi …… (@ Slab on Grade)

Determine direct and secondary shear in fasteners

Try (5) Hilti X-U fasteners,
Direct Shear on Screws = 1320 lbs / 5 = 264 lbs
Calculate Secondary Shear on screws with spacing as given,

Moment of Inertia of Screw Group, Is

Is = 0.93752(2) + 2.06252 (2) = 10.2656 in2

Resulting Torsional Moment in Screw Group = 1320 * (0.6875) / 2 = 453.75 lb–in.

Max Secondary Shear in Screw = Mty/ Is = 453.75 (2.0625) / 10.2656 = 91.16 lb

Resultant Shear in Fasteners = 264 2 + 91.16 2 = 279.295 lbs

Design the connection of the stud to floor system at top

Force required in each stud, P = 2640/2 = 1320 lbs

Capacity of weld connection = 1817 lb/in x 1 in = 1817 lb > 1320 lb
