Opinion Survey Assistant Principal

The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education
and Training that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school
climate, student behaviour, and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform
and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
A random sample of approximately 30 per cent of parents/caregivers/guardians have been selected to par-
ticipate in this year’s survey. Those selected will receive an email with further details. We encourage all
families who receive an invitation to participate in this survey.
The Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 15th August to Friday 16th
September.
The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any con-
venient time within up to September 16 on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online
survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Sim-
plified Chinese, Chin (Hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.
The survey results will be communicated to the school community through the annual report.
If you would like more information, please contact the school by email at mhs@mhs.vic.edu.au.

Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews Semester 2 2022

Wednesday 31 August, 10.30am – 6.30pm

Dear Parents,

This semester progress interviews will be held remotely via MS Teams, as was the case in
semester 1.

Interview sessions are 5 minutes long (with a one minute buffer for connection issues). Each
teacher will set their own availability times, and some teachers may be unavailable.

The school uses the COMPASS Student Management System to schedule interviews.

Interview bookings will be open to parents from 4.00pm on Thursday 25 August. Bookings
will close at 9.00am on Wednesday 31 August.

HOW TO BOOK AN INTERVIEW:

• All parents should make sure that they are able to log onto the Compass parent portal.
(You can access it from the School’s home page www.mhsviceduau.com. Go to MyMHS
in the top right corner and click the link for Compass.)
• Enter your Compass ID and password.
• Click Book Parent Teacher Interviews. (If you have more than one son at MHS you will
be given the option to select one or the other.)
• Click My Bookings
• A list of your son’s teachers will be displayed at the right of the screen
• Select a time slot
• Select the teacher and click OK (to undo a booking click on it and click delete booking.)

If you need your Compass log-in details, contact compassreset@mhs.vic.edu.au. Compass

details will not be given out over the phone.

If you encounter any problems with the bookings system, contact mhs@mhs.vic.edu.au.
Please note that the school cannot make bookings for you.

Your son’s teachers may have indicated on his report if an interview is recommended, alt-
hough you are of course free to make bookings even if they have not been recommended.

Parents are requested to only make interview times with the Student Wellbeing Coordina-
tor, Ms Jenny Mill or the Careers Coordinator, Mr Bill Theodoropoulos if there is a specific
issue relating to your son that you wish to discuss.
Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews Andrew Sloan
Assistant Principal

ON THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW:

IMPORTANT: THE COMPASS APP WILL NOT WORK FOR CONFERENCES. YOU MUST CON-
NECT VIA A COMPUTER
• Click on the Community Tab on Compass
• Click on Conferences
• Click on My Bookings
• Click on the appropriate booking time (in a GREEN RECTANGLE)
• Click on the teacher’s name in the Location box – this is the link to your meeting
• The teacher will then admit you to the meeting from the lobby when they are ready.

Please turn on your cameras during the interview so that it can be conducted face to face.

We ask that students attend the interviews with their parents, as the feedback given is di-
rected towards them.

Interviews should not be recorded without the express permission of both parties. If record-
ing commences without permission the interview may be terminated.

As the time available for interviews is limited, we do ask that parents keep strictly to the 5-
minute time limit. It is a good idea to leave spaces between interviews to allow for connec-
tion issues.

We look forward to meeting you to discuss your son’s progress.

Getting stuff done - Willpower

Willpower is the drive to resist short-term temptations to meet your long-term goals. Some describe it as a
battle between logic and emotions. It could be studying for the test you need to ace rather than watching
several episodes of a favorite Netflix series. Or turning down dessert to help you look better in the new
outfit you bought.
People use different definitions to describe willpower, but some of the most common synonyms are: drive,
determination, self-discipline, self-control, self-regulation, effortful control.
Willpower is like a muscle. To a certain extent, you can build it up over time. You can also overuse it leading
to will power fatigue. Although your willpower may be fatigued in the short term, it can be strengthened
over time – similar to muscles when you exercise.
Willpower tends to be greater if you are working toward your own goals. If you’re making the sacrifice for
someone else, it’s may be a drain on your willpower.
Seven tips to build better willpower:
1. Don’t take on too much at once. Try setting small, achievable goals and focus your willpower on ac-
complishing those. E.g. Don’t try to complete a full chapter of Maths in one go. Aim to work on 1 or 2
questions at a time.
2. Plan ahead. Give your willpower a break by making decisions in advance: Plan your homework sched-
ule for the entire week. This will help you avoid impulsive sessions on youtube or League of Legends.
Schedule fun times into your calendar at the beginning of each week to help you be more likely to
keep the homework commitment.
3. Avoid temptation. If your willpower is being tested, try to put off the thing you really want to do until
later or distract yourself with something else that won’t keep you from your goals.
4. Strengthen your willpower. Mindfulness meditations may improve your self-control and help you act
from intention rather than habit. Physical and mental fatigue can lessen your willpower. Get enough
sleep to keep your energy levels up.
5. Track your efforts. Make a note of what you are achieving. This will help you see the changes that you
are making, and strengthen your willpower.
6. Reward yourself. If you reach a milestone, celebrate with something that won’t set you back. Don’t
reward yourself by binging the whole study session on connecting with friends. Plan some exercise,
meet up with friends on the weekend, read a good book.
7. Get support from others. Talk to your friends about what you are hoping to achieve. Encourage them
to set goals for themself and share the journey.

Morrisby Career Interviews paused

Year 9 Students & Parents

The second stage of the Morrisby Program will continue at a later date in Term 3. It has now been delayed
further because there is a huge shortfall of Morrisby Consultants available to us to conduct these interviews
with our students.

The interview schedule will still be 8 interview slots per day with back-to-back sessions in the afternoon.
The number of consultants operating at each time slot could range from about 8-10 per time slot.
The time slots will be:
• 8:55am—9:40am;
• 9:45am—10:30am;
• 10:35am—11:20am;
• 11:40am—12:25pm;
• 12:30pm—1:15pm;
• 1:40pm—2:10pm;
• 2:10pm—2:40pm;
• 2:40pm—3:30pm.

Students who are still waiting to complete this activity are reminded to read their emails regularly and to be
on alert for any emails from Ms Annabelle Yeaman because scheduling for interviews can only be done
about 24 hours prior to the Morrisby Interviews taking place.
