SCARCE WATER
DROUGHTS
LACK OF WATER💧
During droughts, there is a lack of
drinking water. Rivers, lakes, and
wells dry up, causing water scarcity.
This leads to unsafe water sources,
waterborne diseases, and poor
sanitation. Solutions include water
conservation, infrastructure
development, purification
technologies, education, and
addressing the causes of droughts.
HUNGER AND FAMINE
Droughts contribute to hunger and famine
by causing crop failure, livestock losses, and
water scarcity. Lack of rainfall stunts crop
growth, reduces yields, and raises food
prices. Livestock suffer from malnutrition
and death. Water scarcity leads to
malnutrition, diseases, and displacement.
Solutions include efficient irrigation,
drought-resistant crops, early warning
systems, social safety nets, and sustainable
development practices to build resilience.
WILDFIRES🔥
Droughts increase the risk and
severity of wildfires. Dry vegetation
becomes highly flammable, and
strong winds spread fires more
rapidly. Limited water availability
hampers firefighting efforts. To
mitigate the impact, prevention
measures, early warning systems,
and addressing the root causes of
drought are crucial.
FLOOD
ENDANGERED
ANiMALS
ENDANGERED ANiMALS
Floods can affect wildlife in different ways.
They can create or improve habitats, enrich
soil nutrients, and benefit certain species.
However, floods can also disrupt and
displace wildlife, increase disease
transmission, and cause mortality. The
impacts depend on the flood intensity and
duration. Conservation efforts and
managing floodplains can help mitigate
negative effects and support wildlife.
SEDIMENTATION & EROSION
During floods, sedimentation occurs when
floodwaters deposit sediment and create
new land areas, while erosion happens
when water forcefully moves across the
land, causing soil loss. Sedimentation can
benefit certain habitats, but excessive
erosion leads to soil degradation and
environmental damage. Implementing
erosion control measures and sustainable
land use practices help mitigate these
impacts.
DISEASES
Droughts can spread diseases through
contaminated water, disease-carrying
vectors, compromised food safety, and
respiratory issues from dust storms and
wildfires. To address these risks, we must
ensure clean water access, promote
hygiene, control vectors, ensure food
safety, provide healthcare, and offer
psychosocial support to affected
communities.
CONTAMINATION
During floods, water and soil can become
contaminated with pollutants, posing risks
to human health and the environment.
Floodwaters can carry sewage, chemicals,
and debris, leading to waterborne diseases
and unsafe conditions for drinking or
recreational activities. Sediment and
pollutants deposited by floods can
contaminate soil, potentially affecting
agriculture and ecosystems. Measures such
as clean water access, proper cleanup,
pollution prevention, and monitoring are
crucial to mitigate contamination risks and
protect public health and the environment.
