which are very useful in day to day communication with the common people. These words will
directly help the new learners of Kannada language to communicate easily and smoothly with the
native speakers of Karnataka.
The structural lessons are scientifically graded and these lessons have been presented through
activities and conversations in the background of socially and culturally with the familiar contents
which directly help the new learners. Most of the conversations are interactive and informative. In all
the chapters the language used is very simple and words used which are in graded and also useful in
daily conversation. The dialect of Kannada language used in all the chapters is generally accepted
dialect that is Bengaluru - Mysore dialect of Kannada. Because this dialect form is accepted by all
the kannadigas as a standard written form of dialect both in conversation and written form.
All the lessons are in same pattern in a presentation of contents from conversation, structure
pattern, key to instructors, exercises for students, lastly vocabulary list used in the conversations and
structure patterns. Most of the lessons are in the form of conversation. Kannada language is given in
the form of English transliteration to make the non kannadigas to read, understand and to write easily
in the initial stage of learning. The model key to transcription is also given in the beginning of the
book. This key to transcription has been clearly followed throughout the book in written and spoken
form of Kannada.
The structure patterns and the exercises are meant for the clear reinforcement of the same
structure patterns introduced in all the lessons. Here, I would like to request all the students to take up
this application pattern in solving the activities and also to establish the structure in learning of
Kannada language as making it your habit. All the teachers who are going to teach this book should
follow the key to instructors (Teachers Mannual) given in the third stage of each lesson. Because,
the conversation and structure patterns have been developed according to Key to instructors
information. The vocabulary part at the end of each lesson contains the newly introduced content
words along with their meaning and explanation.
The learners are expected that they should start learning through understanding, speaking,
reading and writing in a order that is LSRW skills method. The complete book has been designed and
drafted as per the model and instructions given by Central Institute of Indian languages (CIIL).
The learning of a language is learning of culture. language is the mirror of the
community/society. So, any person/student who come from other state/any other country or may be
staying within the state of Karnataka who did not study Kannada and do not know how to read and
write Kannada language, they can learn Kannada by following the methods and instructions given in
this book. This book serves as a self instructional course manual to the general readers who wants to

learn Kannada language independently. Student should talk to the people and communicate with the
native speakers of Kannada without any hesitation and without any inferiority complex. In the
beginning stage, native speakers - some of them may laugh at you but you should not take it seriously
because this behavior is very common in all the languages initial learning stage. If they laugh at your
pronunciation and wrong construction of words and sentences, do not discourage yourself while
laughing with them try to know the correct form of the word which they used and the word which you
wrongly pronounced in the beginning stage for all those correct clarification you may find it in this
textbook and also may contact your teachers who teach you in the classroom.
With all this information, I hope and believe that you succeed in learning Kannada language by using
the methods and patterns explained in this Workbook Pattern (Self Instructional Course) textbook.
At last, I acknowledge my sincere and faithful gratitude and special thanks to Honorable
Commissioner Sri Pradeep P, IAS, Department of Technical and Collegiate Education (DTCE) and
Sri R Manjunath, Director Department of Technical Education, and Dr. Hi Chi Boralingaiah,

PART – I
With the help of pros one can Make Language Learning Fun a lot. It is also quite important. There
have been many times when people have been to a new country and even the basic shopping seems
difficult due to language barrier. At this point, knowing the local language will help to change the way
one can see the country, people and culture as forming a bridge to narrow the language based barrier.
To the newcomers who come from foreign countries / other states / who have not learnt the native
language for such people / students, Learning of a new language will help to :
1. Builds Trust
If you are well aware of the ways you can speak the local language, chances are high that people will
end up trusting you more.

experience you better enjoy. You can further try to join festivals and understand the reason behind
celebration in place of just joining celebration just for fun.
5. Unmatched Experience
There is Resource for Content Localization available from the reliable centers, if you need help with
the language translation needs. On the other hand, if you know the language of the natives, it is easier
to know them personally. Just be in their positions. If they don’t know your language, they will be
working hard to think what you are trying to say. They might find it difficult to express them naturally
and completely.
On the other hand, it becomes natural for you to speak to a person, explain things in proper details and
be more expressive if spoken in your language. It is mainly because you know that the person can talk
to you and understand you directly. So, if you can speak the local language, communication will be
easier and faster.
6. Respect
Other than dealing with Local Culture For Translation, you have to speak the native language for
gaining respect. It is true that locals respect and even admire visitors who can at least try to speak the
language. It makes them feel more important and they will open up more, share some localized
knowledge and show places to shop for better bargains and lower prices. If not, then it might be super
difficult to negotiate prices using any language but the local one.
7. Independence
If you fail to speak local language, the itinerary will include just the basic local hotspots. You can
always hire a cab for the tour, but it is expensive and will help you spend just few minutes on every
spot. But, if you speak local language, you can safety tour the place and even venture to the outskirts
for discovering places not included in the itinerary list. You will come more close to the local shops
and end up going through best bargains of all time.

Language learning helps to develop strong cognitive skills, such as a better concept formation, mental
flexibility, multitasking, listening skills and problem-solving, in addition to improve social interaction
and also encourages the connection between peers.
Use of local language help to mingle with the local society and ensures security, pleasant welcoming
from auto/cab drivers, shop owners, employees of local government etc., and make the living easier
and more comfortable.

pronunciation of words with variation in pitch, pace, volume, pauses etc., but also produces a fluent
and enjoyable delivery during conversation/debate/presentation.
5) Listen to Kannada news and watch Kannada movies.
6) Listen to Kannada FM radios for news, live conversations and songs.
7) Use online applications (apps) for fast learning.

PART – IV
Lesson - 10
Kannada Language Script , PART - 1
The writing pattern of Kannada letters / alphabets as per the writing norms of
Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL)
To write a language one must know about the script of that language.
Generally, learning of any Language, that is a local Language / regional language
/ may be a new language that you need to learn for the purpose of communication in a
different place where you how to be a few years with the purpose of education, new
employment, for a new business, visiting new place as a part of tourism or educational
visit, to meet / interact / communicate with those people you must be good in
knowledge of language / culture / tradition / life style of such people in the respective
areas / region, so in order to communicate in a better way we must know their regional
language, otherwise the communication may be a miscommunication or that type of
§¼ÀPÉ PÀ£ÀßqÀ
102
communication may lead for miss understanding between you and others ( local
People).
1. In the First step of Learning a new language that we should start with listening
and hearing Activities.
2. The second step of learning is the capacity of understanding along with trying to
express the regional language in which we are good at listening and hearing.
3. Third step of learning a language is after listening and speaking, in the next level
we should be able to read. to read a language we must know the familiarity of
that language through the script. Even if we are not good in script
knowledge, we may try to read some how through transliteration pattern.
4. To write a language we must know the script of that language. Usually the
writing step is the last step of learning a language.
§¼ÀPÉ PÀ£ÀßqÀ
103
As per the recent grammarians, they have been telling that language learning should
not end in the four level that is writing skills. to write a new language we must know
grammar rules of that language. the grammar means a systematic study of
words, sentences, Phrases and clauses, in brief - parts of speech. if a person is good
in local language and it's grammar, he or she will be capable to present that
language with clarity in both spoken form and written form.

Kannada Aksharamale (PÀ£ÀßqÀ CPÀëgÀªÀiÁ¯É)
Kannada language is written and read from left to right.
The Kannada letters in Kannada are called aksharagalu (CPÀëgÀUÀ¼ÄÀ ). Kannada script (aksharamale or
varnamale) has 49 letters (akshara or varna) and are classified into 3 categories: Svaragalu (Vowels),
Vyanjanagalu (Consonants) and Yogavahakagalu.
§¼ÀPÉ PÀ£ÀßqÀ
104
Vyanjanagalu (Consonants) are made of structured and unstructured consonants. The number of
structured consonants is 25 and are shown in Table – 10.2. While pronouncing, stress to be applied to
certain consonants, like in “Kha” as compared to “Ka”.
The sound of a consonant is produced by a partial or complete obstruction of the airstream by a
constriction of the speech organs. Also, some are voiced (made by a vibration of the vocal cords) and
some are voiceless (no vibration).
Table – 10.2

AiÀÄ - Ya - य gÀ - Ra - र ® - La - ल ªÀ - Va - व ±À - Sha - श
Unstructured consonants are a speech sound produced by human beings when the breath that flows out
through the mouth is blocked by the teeth, tongue, or lips.
The number of Yogavahakagalu (semiconsonants or part vowel, part consonants) is 02 and are shown
in Table – 10.4.

CA - Am - अं C: - Aha - अ:
The number of written characters in Kannada language, is far more than49 because of combination of
different characters. It forms diagraphs (a combination of two letter representing one sound) or
compound characters called the vattakshara (Ottakashara) in Kannada. These words are formed by the
use of symbols of the consonants. These symbols appear below the consonants as in CªÀÄä–
These Kannada stress words require extra energy to show up with from higher pitch, greater length,
and greater loudness during pronunciation. In the above examples stress is decided by mma and ppa.
However in English, stress words are formed with the use of English letters itself appearing
successively like in words Committee, See, Luggage, College, Engineering etc. Here the stress letters
are mm, tt,ee,ee, gg, ll and ee respectively.
Kannada stress letters [vattakshara (Ottakashara)] along with English transliteration are shown in
Table –10.5 to assist the pronunciation of the same.

बारहखड़ी].
Example:
Union of vowels with consonant “ka” is illustrated in Table – 10.6.
