RESOURCES FOR BEGINNER WITCHES -

*this list will be edited/added to as more information and resources are found*
*a reminder that most modern-day witchcraft books are heavily affected by white colonization
and whiteness. Keep in mind your privilege and how this affects the sources you read*
As an eclectic self taught witch, I consider these topics to be the basis and foundation for
beginning your journey as a witch, and helpful to decolonize your craft:

Mythology/Historical Resources
Magic of the Celtic Gods and Goddesses by Carl McColman and Kathryn Hinds
The Aradia - Book of the Witches
The Greek Myths By Robert Graves
Norse Mythology by John Lindow
The Gods of the Egyptians by E. A. Wallis Budge
Mythology by Martin R Phillips

Cleansing
*reminder that WHITE SAGE and PALO SANTO are endangered and heavily culturally
appropriated. SMUDGING is a closed practice. Other options for smoke cleansing include
lavender, frankincense, sandalwood, rosemary, and bay. Make your own bundles for smoke
cleansing and get creative! Other forms of sage are ok aka common sage or clary sage, but
always make sure to source ethically, double check the kind, or grow your own!*

Spell Books/General
I usually recommend making your own spells, but here are a few spell books/general books I
thoroughly enjoy:
*note that Cunningham and Buckland are Wiccan authors and come from a white cis straight
male perspective. They’re great for getting a basis of Right Hand Path witchcraft but keep in
mind that not all of it will resonate. Llewyn tends to mass produce witch books, but keeps them
rather eurocentric/Wiccan/culturally appropriative so keep that in mind when reading things by
them*

BOOKS TO STAY AWAY FROM:

Witch by Lisa Lister - Trans-exclusionary
Witchcraft by Anastasia Graywolf - uses slurs for Roma witches and takes from closed
Indigenous practices
Silver Ravenwolf: not well researched, lots of misinformation
Grimoire for the Green Witch by Anna moura - heavily religious language, no index, passes
Wiccan off as “ancient tradition”

Shadow Work
*Shadow work is not always considered beginner friendly. Before starting shadow work, I
recommend getting a therapist since deep trauma work can be difficult to do by one’s self. I
consider working with the shadow an integral part of witchcraft, but please only start researching
it as a beginner witch and do not attempt until you truly feel ready.*
