Rigoberta Menchú Tum.

Rigoberta Menchú was born in Chimel, Guatemala on January 9, 1959. She is a Mayan Indian
woman. In her childhood she helped with the family farm work. She studied in a Catholic elementary
school education where she participated in social reform activities and became an activist of Indian
rights.

She was 21 when the militaries killed her parents and a brother and other brother died of malnutrition.
After that, the army killed her mother. Then, Rigoberta became more active and taught herself,
Spanish, as well as other Mayan languages. Then she worked educating indigenous people against
the military oppression.

In 1981 she arrived to Mexico because she had to leave her country. Then she flew to the U.S. where
she met with indigenous leaders who awoke her to the idea of going to Europe as an ambassador of
indigenous people. So, she flew to Europe and spent a lot of time at the United Nations.

Now, Rigoberta Menchú has become widely known because her work as a leader in pro of Indian
rights and ethno-cultural reconciliation, not only in Guatemala but also in the Western Hemisphere.
Because of her labor she won the Nobel Prize in 1992.
