Part Two: Reading-Summary
“Essential Question” How can we take responsibility?
The story is set in early summer of 1851, and follows 12-year-old Abigail Parker and her
father who run an Underground Railroad station on their farm in Massachusetts. They
nervously await their first "delivery" of people on their way to Canada to escape slavery.
When two women arrive at their doorstep, one of them a 60-year-old and the other a 14-
year-old named Nellis, Abigail and her father learn that Nellis is sick with a fever. Abigail
is sent to gather fever herbs, but on the way back, she encounters their neighbor Mr. Carrington and
spins a tale about hunting mint for her mother's special cake recipe. Abigail and Emma, the older woman's
companion, nurse Nellis back to health using the herbs. When Nellis recovers, she and Emma continue on their
journey, thanking Abigail and her father for their help.
Analysis
The story follows the experiences of 12-year-old Abigail Parker and her father, who have
recently made their farm a station on the Underground Railroad, a secret network of
people and places that helped slaves escape to freedom in the North. The story takes
place in the summer of 1851, and Abigail and her father are waiting for their first group of
people to arrive. When the group does arrive, they discover that two of the four people
have fallen ill with fever and had to be left behind. Abigail and her father take in the two
young girls, Nellis and Emma, and Abigail is tasked with finding a cure for Nellis's fever.
Despite the risks of being caught by slave catchers and the danger of harboring escaped
slaves, Abigail manages to find the necessary herbs and helps cure Nellis. In the end,
Nellis and Emma continue on their journey to freedom, and Abigail realizes the strength
and courage needed to fight against the injustices of slavery.
The story highlights the bravery and compassion of those who helped slaves escape to
freedom through the Underground Railroad. It also illustrates the dangers and risks

nervousness to her eventual courage and determination to help Nellis, shows the personal
growth and development of a young girl as she faces the harsh realities of slavery and the
