CHAPTER-1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction

The world's population is growing at an unprecedented rate, and there is a corresponding increase in demand for food
production. Agriculture has always been a critical sector for meeting this demand but faces many challenges such as water
scarcity, climate change, soil degradation, etc. One way to address these issues is to use innovative technology solutions
that can help optimize resource usage while increasing productivity yields sustainably.

Data on soil moisture play a big role in hydrological studies, farming production, and natural observation. Particularly, rural
yield is dependent on a few evolving parameters including temperature, stickiness, and soil moisture. With the use of Web
of Things (IoT), distributed computing, and versatile registration advances, we have designed and developed a framework
for calculating and monitoring soil moisture in this project.

1.2 Objectives

The specific objectives of the thesis are followings-

• To design an automated plant watering system that uses IoT technology to monitor soil moisture levels and water plants
accordingly.

• To develop a user-friendly mobile application (using Blynk) that allows users to remotely control and monitor their plants
in real-time.

• To integrate various sensors such as soil moisture sensors, temperature sensors, humidity sensors etc. with NodeMCU
8266 microcontroller to collect data about plant health parameters.

• To implement machine learning algorithms for predicting ideal watering times based on historical sensor data collected
from different types of plants

• To build a cost-effective solution that is easy to deploy and maintain for both home gardeners and small-scale farmers.

Overall, this project aims to revolutionize traditional farming practices by leveraging IoT technology to create smart
agricultural solutions.

1.3 Overview of the project

In Bangladesh, agriculture contributes about 11.63% of total GDP. [1] Water can be supplied through irrigation, although
there can be significant water waste in some situations. In order to save time and water, we created a project named
NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi module based autonomous irrigation system using Arduino IDE-IoT. We are utilizing a variety of
sensors in this suggested system, including soil moisture, temperature, and humidity sensors. Additionally, land is
automatically watered by turning the motor ON/OFF dependent on the soil moisture value. The user's Android application
will display these detected metrics and the motor status. With the use of the Internet of Things (IoT), a mobile device may
be used to check on a gadget's performance.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is concerned with
linking talking devices that are put in various places that might be far from
one another. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a sort of network technology that gathers data from various sensors and
enables anything to connect to the Internet in order to exchange data. It can also be used to change the device's status.
Additionally, the central processing unit will have a communication device for relaying data from the sensors to the user's
device. A higher-level communication tool, such as a Wi-Fi module, will be used for this. The core module transforms the
processed data into meaningful data that is then transmitted to the user. A portable device, like a cell phone or tablet, can
be used by the user to examine the data. These days, farming is really concerned about water scarcity. This technology
provides farmers with an automated irrigation system that is based on soil moisture to water their crops effectively.
1.5 EXISTING SYSTEM

Numerous, well-established soil moisture systems now in use rely on cable connection. IoT is a technology that employs
computers or mobile devices to autonomously regulate fundamental agricultural features and functions through the

Internet from any location in the globe. The suggested solution configures smart agriculture utilizing the free IoT platform
ArduinoIDE and the NodeMCU Wi-Fi web service. Compared to the current system, it is a smart agriculture system that is
highly user-free and easy.

1.4 Blynk mobile Software

Blynk is a powerful tool for creating mobile applications that interact with microcontrollers such as NodeMCU 8266. With
the Blynk app, we can easily create custom user interfaces to control various aspects of our smart plant watering system
using buttons, sliders and other widgets. The app allows us to remotely monitor sensor data from the NodeMCU 8266 in
real-time and trigger actions based on specific conditions. This makes it an ideal choice for developing IoT-based projects
like smart plant watering systems where the user needs to have complete control over their plants even when they are
away from home.

CHAPTER-2:

AIM AND SCOPE OF THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION

Numerous, well-established soil moisture systems now in use rely on cable connection. IoT is a technology that employs

2.1 OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The major goal of this project is to give farmers access to an autonomous irrigation system, which will help them save time,
money, and energy. The manual involvement needed for conventional farmland irrigation systems may be reduced to a
minimum using automated irrigation technology.
The majority of farmers use huge tracts of land, making it quite challenging to get to all of their corners and keep track of
them. Uneven water drops are a possibility occasionally. Because of this, crops are of low quality, further contributing to
financial losses. The Smart Irrigation System, which makes use of the most recent IoT technology, is helpful in this situation
and makes farming easier. With the smart irrigation system, there is a lot of possibilities for automating the entire irrigation
system. Here, we're utilizing an ESP8266 NodeMCU Module and moisture sensor to develop an Internet of Things-based
irrigation system. It will send data to an IoT cloud server to track the status of the land in addition to automatically
watering plants based on the moisture content
