Coaching Journal Entry #3

Overall, I think our second Coaching Session went very smoothly. After initially
learning about the subject my teacher wanted to focus on, writing, I felt it was
going to be a challenge to come up with a technology tool for a subject I feel uses
the least amount of technology for this age (first grade) because it is done by hand.
However, once I was able to come up with a technology tool, I was confident in
my ability to support her and was able to fully prepare for our session. I offered a
couple of options for graphic organizers that students could use when planning
their opinion writing. From there the teacher chose which one she thought would
work best and decided to save the others to scaffold and offer to students once they
become stronger writers. Using the graphic organizer and video note, a technology
tool offered on our personal class websites for students to video record their
responses, students could plan and verbalize their opinion, reasons, and supporting
details to use as a reference once they get to the actual writing stage of the writing
process. These tools will support the teacher’s goal of students using more details
in their writing pieces.
From the modeling teaching strategies offered by Knight, the teacher chose for me
to model using the graphic organizer and video note in her classroom with the
students present. This will be our next step in the coaching process.
