M200.DAT will be used as a simple example for a cantilever beam using METHOD SWAY. The
first three lines of M200.DAT commence with exclamation marks to provide help, as does the
seventh. The fourth to the fifteenth line provide data. Isolated exclamation marks '!' should remain
undisturbed. The fourth line permits the engineer to choose from: mt=1 for concrete, mt=2 for
timber, mt=3 for CHS, mt=4 for RHS, mt=5 for an Isection. The fifth line permits the engineer to
choose the number of loading increments thus: ninc=1 for METHOD ELASTIC; ninc=2-99 for
METHOD SWAY, ninc=100-200 for METHOD PLASTIC. The acceleration due to gravity is
9.80665 m/sec², which is required for the computation of the natural frequency in Hertz. SI units of
kN & m are used in combinations as follows: Young's modulus for concrete, timber & steel is
9.33E6, 9E6 & 210E6 kN/m² respectively; modulus of rigidity for concrete, timber & steel is
3.73E6, 0.563E6 & 81E6 kN/m² respectively; density for concrete, timber & steel is 25, 7 & 77
kN/m3 respectively; yield strength for concrete, timber & steel is 11E3, 5.8E3 & 255E3 kN/m²
respectively. See Leaflet 13 for advice given in IStructE/ICE Steelwork Manual.
