Data distributions
Go to
https://www.humanbenchmark.com/dashboard/reactiontime
and take the reaction time test. Write down your 5 results, as
well as the mean of the 5 results (which is provided after you
finish).
Look at your Reaction Time Statistics chart, and also look at the
chart for average reaction time for everybody. The average
chart resembles that of a "normal distribution", though it is not
actually a true normal distribution.

variance (v) =
standard deviation ( )=
*the larger the st. dev., the more spread out the data is (the less
consistent the scores are)
Ex. 4: Find the standard deviation of your 5 reaction times from
your Reaction Time Test.
______ had a standard deviation of ____
______ had a standard deviation of ____
______ had a standard deviation of ____
Therefore, _______ had the most
consistent scores.
(Smaller s.d. = more consistent data =
less spread out)

Ex. 5: SAT scores are normally distributed with a mean of 500 and
st. dev. of 100 (per section).
a) What % of students have scores between 400 and 600?
Practice:
1) Nina’s scores in Chemistry this semester were rather
inconsistent: 100, 85, 55, 95, 75, 100.
For this population, how many scores are within one standard
deviation of the mean?

Ex. 4: Find the standard deviation of your 5 reaction times from
your Reaction Time Test.
Grant had a standard deviation of 3.66
Hadley had a standard deviation of 2.58
Jack had a standard deviation of 35.7
Therefore, Hadley had the most
consistent scores.
