E. Executive M.Tech. Degree in Data Science and
Artificial Intelligence (DSAI)
In recent times, data is getting generated at an unprecedented rate. As a result, data-driven
decision-making has become increasingly important, and therefore, Data Science (DS) is the
need of the hour. Industry demands manpower with the necessary analytical and programming
skills to analyze and design algorithms using data arising from multiple disciplines. The
Executive M.Tech. degree program in DSAI at IIT Dharwad is aimed to fulfill the above
requirements of a working professional.
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) is jointly offered by the Department of
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Department of Electrical Engineering (EE).
Since their inception in 2016, the same year of establishment of IIT Dharwad, Department of
CSE and Department of EE have been offering a four-year B.Tech. Programme at an
undergraduate level in Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering,
respectively. At the postgraduate level, the Departments offer research programs such as M.S.
(by Research) and Ph.D. programs. The Departments’ UG and PG curriculum offer a distinct
combination of courses with a sound conceptual understanding together with practice-oriented
learning elements. The theoretical rigor is imparted from a selection of courses in basic sciences
and interdisciplinary topics in addition to subjects from the core mechanical and materials
engineering curriculum, which are backed by an array of hands-on laboratory courses.
The Executive M.Tech. degree program in DSAI is designed to provide maximum flexibility
without compromising on the rigor. As a general philosophy, whenever possible, a course on
a topic is divided into modules of half-semester each. This gives flexibility for candidates to
take up modules and complete the subjects. At IIT Dharwad, a full semester course is around
6 credits. Therefore, a typical half-semester course will be 3 credits, which is termed as a
module/course.
● All the courses of the Executive M.Tech. degree program in DSAI will run ONLINE
except a part of some courses under special circumstances.
● The classes will be conducted on the weekends.
● Evaluations, Examinations will be in-person, at IIT Dharwad
● If the candidates are required to be on the campus for any of the courses, they will be
informed well in advance.
Anyone completing the Executive M. Tech program in DSAI should be able to interpret data
(from any discipline) and solve the problem of interest in an efficient manner. Broadly,
expertise in DS can be obtained by having sound knowledge of (a) mathematical tools, (b)
programming skills, and (c) understanding the needs of different disciplines. Towards this, the
curriculum is designed to provide necessary mathematical and programming tools through core
subjects, and various electives to pursue his/her interests in the field of DS. A list of courses
and electives is provided in Appendix I. The general philosophy followed is that the core
courses correspond to important tools from mathematics and computer science in addition to
one introductory course in DS or Machine Learning (ML) while the electives consist of courses
9
related to DSAI (including application-specific courses such as speech processing). Next, the
details on eligibility for admissions and the structure of the program are presented.
10
linear equations, Eigen-value decomposition, SVD.
○ Probability theory: Axioms of probability, random variables, PDF, CDF,
different distributions, mean, and variance.
2. Programming skills
○ The programming tests/interviews will test the familiarity with basic concepts
in computer science, and the ability to analyze a given problem and find a solution
to it. The preferred programming languages are C, C++, and python.
Core courses
25 Credits
Executive M.Tech.
Thesis/project 32 + 32 = 64 Credits
Note that the requirement for a master’s degree at IIT Dharwad is a minimum of 125 credits.
Since 25 credits are accounted for the core courses (please refer to Table 1 below for list of
core courses and 64 credits are accounted towards Executive M.Tech. thesis/project, to receive
the Executive M.Tech. degree, a candidate should earn at least 36 credits through electives
(125 is the minimum credits for M. Tech degree).
Among the electives, a candidate should earn six credits by taking courses from the following
basket: (i) Statistical Machine Learning (SML), (ii) Pattern Recognition (PR), (iii) Machine
Learning (ML), (iv) Artificial Neural networks (ANNs), (v) Introduction to Reinforced
Learning (IRL), (vi) Deep Learning (DL). This ensures that the candidate receives a good
exposure to DSAI in case he/she wants to exit the program in between (e.g. getting a PG
Diploma or Executive Master’s Degree; refer to E.5 for exit options from the program). This
should be done, preferably in semesters 2, 3, or 4. For example, if a candidate takes PR and
ML as core courses, he/she can choose other courses, namely SML, ANNs, IRL, or DL as
electives.

F. Executive M.Tech. Degree in Electric Vehicle
Technology (EVT)
In recent times, for sustainability, we are shifting to electric vehicles. Due to this, the industry
demand for manpower with necessary skills in EV Technology is increasing. Furthermore,
upskilling the working professionals through a degree program that does not compromise on
the quality of the program while keeping the program flexible enough for working
professionals has become increasingly important. The Executive M. Tech in EV Technology
at IIT Dharwad is aimed to fulfil the above requirement of a working professional.
Executive M.Tech. Degree in Electric Vehicle Technology (EVT) is jointly offered by the
