Procedure for x-ray radiographing of welded plate

Student Name: ________________________________________________________

No: ________________________________________________________
Date: ________________________________________________________
Lecturer: ________________________________________________________

1. Equipment
a) Baltospot Ceram 235 X-ray machine
b) Source size: 2mm

2. Film
a) Trade mark: Kodak
b) Type: Class II

3. Intensifying screen
a) Material: Lead
b) Quantity: 2 per film
c) Thickness: Front :0. 125 mm, Back: 0.125 mm

4. Film Cassette

a) Material: Plastic
b) Dimension:

5. Test sample

a) RT welded carbon steel sample kit

b) Measure thickness of the plate and weld reinforcement and input the
data in the technique sheet
2

6. Exposure Geometry

a) Focal spot size: 2mm

b) Source to film distance: 900 mm
c) Object to film distance: In contact with film
d) Number of film per exposure: One

7. Location marker

Use lead numbers, letters and location marker belt on the source side to locate
accurately the position of the radiograph in relation to the weld position. At first the
instructor will show you how to put location markers and other letters on your weld
and you will follow that instruction.

8. Identification of radiograph

Use lead letters and numbers to provide the following information on your
radiographic film:
a) Student's number
b) Part number
c) Welding procedure
d) Types of material
e) Date of inspection

9. Image quality indicator

Choose appropriate image quality indicator to place on the source side surface of the
test part.

10. Prepare the testing specimen

a) Measure the thickness of the weld plate

b) Place the identification lead numbers and letters on the table to arrange desired
sentences and place a glue tape on the arranged letters and numbers so that
letters and numbers are glued on the tape. Carefully place that tape on the
surface of the specimen to be tested.
c) Place the identification number belt on the specimen so that you can identify
the location of discontinuities on your film.

11. Prepare the x-ray film

11.1 Prepare the film in the dark room. Make sure to turn off the white light and
turn on the safety red light.
11.2 Place the intensifying lead screen on the top and the bottom of the film.
11.3 Put the film and intensifying screen inside the film cassette.
11.4 Close the film cassette using tape so that no light goes inside the film.

12. Be familiar with the control panel of X-ray machine

13. Preheating of x-ray machine

a) Make sure the lead door of x-ray machine is closed and the warning lights are
turned on.
b) Turn on the start key
4

c) Read message on LCD. If preheating is required it will show on LCD.

d) Switch the start key on X mark
e) Press both 23 and 23 green buttons simultaneously with pressure
f) Read the message on LCD
g) After preheating turn off the x-ray machine by switching the start button key to
zero.

14. Setup test specimen and film under the x-ray tube

a) Go to the x-ray tube room and set up the specimen and film
5

15. Calculate KV, Ma and exposure time

a) In X-ray room the distance from source to film is 950 mm

b) Choose the kv and exposure time for the desired thickness from the following
exposure chart:

c) Use inverse square law and reciprocating law to measure miliampere and exposure
time for 950 mm source to film distance.
d) Close the x-ray lead door, turn on the emergency lights
e) Turn on control panel
f) Press KV button (Button 17 in picture), add new kv from key pad and press OK
button
g) Add new miliampere value
h) Add new exposure time
i) Switch start button on X position
j) Press both 23 and 23 green buttons simultaneously with pressure
k) Wait until the exposure time is over, the machine will stop automatically, switch
the start key at off position
l) Turn off the emergency light, turn on white light, take survey meter to enter x-ray
tube room, take out your film cassette and send it to dark room for processing.

16. Answer the following questions:

a) Your weld plate thickness is 10mm. Source to film distance is 950 mm. In exposure
chart of your worksheet, the source to film distance is 700mm. Find the exposure time
for 175 kv from the exposure chart for 10mm thickness. Calculate the new kv, mA
and exposure time for 950 mm source to film distance.

b) Your weld plate thickness is 10mm. Source to film distance is 950 mm. In
exposure chart of your worksheet, the source to film distance is 700mm. Find the
exposure time for 140 kv from the exposure chart for 10mm thickness. Calculate the
new kv, mA and exposure time for 950 mm source to film distance.
