53.1 Embanioment Foundation
S11 Earth Fil Embankment
After dearing and grabbing, the ground levels shall be recorded, Then the
surece shall be scaled to a depth of 200 mm. Laboratory Technician sha
Coles representative samples from each locaton and test fr suitabity of the
‘terial. Ifthe malarial found suitable, the scared surface shal be watered to
bring the material tothe moisture content range spectied for compacion, ‘The
‘surfece shall be compacted to the required densiy. Moisture content during
‘compaction shall be within te range of OMC 3 1 5%
5.3.1.2 If the existing material found unsutable, the seme shall be informed to the
Customer / Consultant and the materal'shall be replaced wth the approved
Dorrow materials and compacted tothe required densi.
53.1.3. The Surveyor shell record the pre-work levels on @ Level Book and in case of
contractual equicamens the seme shall be cared out oily wilh the Customer
(his nominee). The alignment layout shal also be checked with respect to te
contact drawings,
53.1.4 Where embankments made of rock, foundation shall be prepared as in 5.6.1.
54 Materials for Embankment
Materials for embankment shall be ether from the roadway excavation or from
"he borrow pits approved by the Customer / Consutant. Excavated rock shal be
Used if approved by the Customer / Consultant by breaking the roc fo the size
sullabe for incorporation in the works. Matera shall have the properies as
=pectied inthe specications applcabe or the project
55 Execution of Earthen Embankment
55:1 The approved material shall be mixed wih wale fo bring the moisture content
within ie range speciied fer compaction. (i@ OMC # 1.5%)
552 The cbove material shallbe spread ina uriform layer with a motor grader to form
4 forse thickness layer fo result in compacted thickness a8 agreed with the

‘Surface of embankment layers shall be kept propery shaped and drained at al
times.
‘The layer shall be compacted wah vibrating rolers to @ density specified inthe
‘applicable speciicatons. Moisture content curing compaction shal bs monitored
‘and mainiained within the range suitable for compaction.
Degree of compaction achieved shall be tested in accordance with the OC
procedure for "Densiy of Sol in-Place by the Sané Cone Method” ROD-C-000-
(015 and recorded inthe format ROD-C-000-015-FI01
Each embankment layer shall be tasted and approved prior to placing the
Foiowing tyer.
In case of the results not conforming fo the requirements, the layer shell be
further compacted tit the spectied minimum compaction requrement iS
‘achioved. The results shal be fonvarded fo the Customer for approval required
Contractual
[Al emtenkment side shapes shall be neatly frished true tothe lines and not
‘sleeper than the slope angles as shown on the drawings. The toe of the side
‘slopes shall be greded to 8 well rounded, smooth profie to blend in withthe
‘ajacert train
ExecuSon of Rockfl Embankment
Rockfit shall not be placed on any slopes sleeper than 1:1. Slopes steeper than
121 shal be regraded 0.8 slope of 1:1
Layers of rockfil shal be laid on the foundation and the maximum lose layer
thigkness shall hens shown an the drawings! specications,
Maximum size of individual parte shal not exceed half the loose layer
thickness permitted for the project. The size detibuton of rocfl shall be 03
stated nthe specications,
Rocifit shal not be used in the top 200 mm of embankment below the subgrade.
Placement ofrockil material shell bein such a manner thatthe lerger rocks are
wel drbuled and the voids ate filed to the maximum practical extent by
smaller particles of rocks, gravel or approved granule materials. Each layer
shall be bladed inlo a neat and homgenous mass pric: fo compaction Any
particles found protuting from the leveled surface shall be removed and
replaced with appropriate size particles, Inia breakdown compaction shal be
performed with heavy bul dozer
Aller compaction, adequate number of grid point elovations shall be recorded
Furher, 2 additonal passes of compaction equipment shall be mace. and
elevation recorded at the previous grid points. Average differen settement
ator the additonal passes shal be less than 0.5% ofthe layer thickness. If not
‘achieved, the above shall be repeated ill he average settement value Is less
than 0.5% of the layer thickness end such levels shal have approval by the
Customer Consutant if required contractual
