Selection, sampling and testing of borrow pit materials for granular
‘subbase and aggregate base course.
Borrow pits shall be identified and the materials shall be stockpiled. Where
‘applicable, materials shall be screened andlor crushed before stockpiling
Noticeable degradation or segregation of stocked materials and intoduction of
foreign materials shal not happen during slockpling,
Representative sampies shall be collected from the stockpiles and tested for the
properties specified in the contract / specications in present of the Customer
Consultant representative, if required.
‘The material test reports conforming to the requirements shall be forwarded 10
the Customer / Consultant for approval
(On approval, extent of deposits and quantity of matarial avalable shall be
‘assessed. Prior to starting borrow pit operations, necessary written permissions
shall be oblained from the authorities concemed.. Where required approval shall
be obiained for screening and crushing plants. Sufficient number of borow pils
al appropriate locations shall be identified, sampled, tested and submited for
‘approval to get sufficient quantity ofthe materials for the project. A sketch shall
be prepared for each borrow pit, identiving location with respect to the road
alignment and co-ordinates, quantity avaiable, borrow pit identification ete. and
allached to the material test reports during submission for approval. Contra test
shall be conducted for the borrow pit malerals at speciiced frequency to ensure
that the properties ofthe materials are not changé
Construction of granular subbese layer on the approved subgrade surface
‘Approved subgrade surface shal be sprinkled wih waler and loose spots if any,
‘shall be recified with the sutable material and by compacting the same,
Materials from the approved stockpile shall be mixed thoroughly with water to get
uniform moisture content which shall be within the specified moisture content
range a the time of compaction,
‘The material shall be placed on the subgrade in a uniform layer not exceeding
£200 mm thickness (afer compaction). Where the required thickness is greater
than 200 mm but less than 400 mm the material shal be placed in two layers of
‘equal thickness. Care shall be taken to spread the material without segregation
{and the with shall be as shown on the drawings. Subgrade surface shall not ba
disturbed during having operations for granular subbace materia

‘Subbase material laid shall be compacted by means of approved compaction
equipment, when the moisture content of the material is within the range for
compaction. Compaction shall progress gradually from the outside towarcs the
centre (lower edge to the upper edge) with each succeeding pass urlormly
‘overlapping the previous pass,
Roling shall continue untl the ente thickness of each subbase layer is
thoroughly and uniformly compacted to the specified dry density. Surface level
shall be monitored by checking the profile with the reference of marked steel pins
‘erected by the side and a sting ine.
‘Alter compaction fleld density shall be checked in accordance with the procedure
Sand Cone Method Test, RDD-QC-000-015 and results shall be recorded In the
format ROD-QC-000-015-Fi01. Frequency of lest shall be as shown on the
Quality Control Plans, surface levels shall be checked at maximum intervals of
20m, end at intermediate poins, If required. Surface regulaily shal be checked
{and recorded as and when required.
Field density reports, surface level records and if required, surface regulaty
‘records shall be submitted for the Customer / Consultant approval,
Where the granular subbase is fo be contructed in more than ane layer, prior fo
placing a subsequent layer, the existing layer shall be made sufficiently moist 10
ensure proper bond between the two layers.
‘The edges and edge slopes of the compacted subbase layer shall be dressed fo
conform to the lines and dimensions shown on the drawings and to present
‘aight, neat ines and slopes as free of loose material as practicable.
Construction of Aggregate Base Course layer on the approved subgrade /
Granular subbase surface.
Granuler subbase surface shall be sprinkled with waler and loose materials, if
‘any, shall be removed and rectified with suitable material and compacted,
‘Aggregate base course material shall be premixed with water in @ pugmill or
‘mixing pian. The amount of waler added shall be such that the material wil be
‘of uniform moisture content and within the spected range for compaction
‘The material shall be placed on the granular subbase surface ina uniform layer
‘not exceeding 200 mm thickness (after compaction). Where the required
{thickness is greater than 200 mm, but less than 400 mm, the material shall De
placed layers of equal thickness. Care shall be taken to spread the material
‘without segregation and the width shall be as shown on the drawings. Granular
‘subbase surface shall not be disturbed during hauling of aggregate base course
material
‘Agoregate base course material lid shall be compacted by means of approved
‘compaction equipment, when the moisture content ofthe material is within the
range for compaction” Compaction shall progress gradually from the outside
towards the cenie (lower edge Io the upper edge) wih each succeeding pass
‘uniformly overlapping the previous pass.
