Learning Outcomes

• Discuss the proper way of opening a beehive.


• Identify important parameters to assess during hive
inspection.
Hive Inspection
• Inspect the hive preferably between 10am - 2pm during
sunny days.
• Do it carefully and be clean
• Wear light colored clothes
• Be ready with your basic gear
• Never block the entrance of the hive
• Blow 2-3 gentle puffs of smoke on the entrance
• Loosen the frames from being glued with propolis
• Inspect from outermost to inward
Hive Inspection
What to inspect?
• The presence and health of the queen
• The comb pattern – brood cell, honey cell, worker cell,
queen cell
• Population of the bees
• Signs of pests and diseases
• Nutritional status
