1. Overview

A field visit was conducted by the EY team in March 2016 to NIFPHATT in


Cochin,with the support of Dr. Arya CEO, Agriculture Sector Skill Council.

Date: 2nd March 2016

Details of Location: Pallimukku, Cochin

Objectives of the institute:

 Technology development and transfer to beneficiaries consisting of rural


fishermen community, small scale industries and Export Processing Houses
through consultancy and job work.
 Imparting training in the field of post harvest technology, refrigeration
technology, Quality control and value added products.
 Providing consultancies and training for rural development programmes /
women empowerment programmes in fish processing, supporting local fish
farmers, self-help groups of fisher community, fishermen’s cooperative
societies functioning under Panchayath Raj Institution.
 Popularisation and test marketing of value added products of all fish varieties
including low value, unconventional species and seasonally abundant fishes.

2. Visit to the processing complex

Fish Processing Complex with most modern fish processing & freezing plant of
5200 Sq.m., a canning plant, drying plant, tunnel freezer, plate freezers, chill
rooms, flake ice plant and 3 cold storages.

NIFPHATT envisages the best post harvest fish utilization and consumption with the
least post harvest losses and delivery of the best quality fish and fish products.

Post harvest technology up gradation through adaptive research to suit the ever
increasing and fast changing consumer needs by developing new processes,
products and packaging on pilot scale. Dissemination of the upgraded technology is
achieved through consultancy, training, popularization of products and consumer
response surveys.

The Integrated Fisheries Project initiated various activities by way of extending


facilities, conducting short-term training courses, providing consultancy services and
also bringing out periodic publications in the form of reports, scientific and technical
papers and bulletins.

The purpose of these workshops was to make available to the fishermen,


entrepreneurs and the concerned fishery officials:

a. The knowledge gained by the investigations conducted by the Project on


various fishing methods and
b. To create awareness in them with regard to the necessity to diversify the
fishing techniques employed by them.
