Jolm Deere 1020 Tractors are utility-type SERIAL NUMBERS

wheel tractors available in three basic styles:
1020 RU, 1020 HU, and 1020 LU.
The 1020 Series Tractors are full three-plow
units designed for general purpose farming. They
are low-built for extra stability.
These tractors are available with either gaso-
line or diesel engines. Other components of the
various models are very similar.
The main features of the tractors are de-
scribed in the paragraphs which follow. Full de-
scriptions of components are given in other sec-
tions throughout this manual.
The engine serial number is stamped on a
plate at the right side of the engine cylinder
block.
The tractor serial number is located at the
right side of the transmission case. NOTE: When
ordering tractor and engine parts, record all the
digits on the serial number pad. An explanation
of the serial number digits is given on the next
page.

SEPARATING ROCKSHAFT FROM TRANSMISSION
IMPORTANT: Use care and cleanliness when
working on any hydraulic system. The smallest
amount of dirt or foreign matter, scratch, nick
or burr can make a hydraulic system inoperative.
Check for evidence of leakage in hydraulic
system before removal.

Disconnect battery ground straps for safety.

Remove transmission case top shield.

Disconnect leads from starter safety switch.

Remove seat assembly from rocks haft hous-

ing (Section 210).

Disconnect hitch lift links from rockshaft

arms.

Disconnect coupler lines (if equipped) from Fig. ;lO·25·2-Removing Rockshaft Housing
rear of selective control valve.

Remove oil return hose between selective con-

trol valve and rockshaft housing. Place the load selector lever in the "L" po-
sition so that the load selector link with roller
will guide over the cam follower during removal
(Fig. 20- 25- 2).

Attach one JD-244 engine adapter to top of

rockshaft housing as shown in Fig. 20-25-2.

Remove attaching cap screws from rocks haft

housing (arrows, Fig. 20-25-1).

Using chain hoist, lift rocks haft housing from

transmission as shown in Fig. 20-25-2.

NOTE: Cover rockshaft opening in top of

transmission to keep out dirt or foreign matter.

REMOVAL
CAUTION: Disconnect the battery ground
cables first to prevent damage that might occur
if wire leads removed from alternator should
be grounded to tractor.
Disconnect wires from alternator. Slip fan
belt off and remove the alternator.
REMOVING AND CLEANING BRUSHES
Clean alternator brushes will assure ·full
charging of the alternator at all times.

Remove the two self-tapping screws and bake-
lite cover. Grasp the field terminal, exert slight
downward pressure and pull brush assembly
back until it clears the two locking pins. Then
tilt the assembly back at approximately a 45°
angle and pull it straight out.

Electrical System Alternator
Replace the brush assembly if the brushes
are excessively worn. The entire assembly is
replaced rather than just the brushes.
If the brushes become clogged with dust or
dirt, remove the dirt with compressed air. It is
well to refrain from cleaning brushes with any
type of liquid, since this would increase the
possiblility of any dust or dirt hardening with-
in the brush cavity and hinder the movement
of the brush.
It may become necessary to use a non-
petroleum base cleaning solvent to clean the
slip rings, should they become contaminated. If
this is not suffiCient, then it is necessary to use
crocus cloth to clean the Slip rings.

Special tools illustrated in this Group are
available as a kit from Owatonna Tool Company,
Owatonna, Minnesota: order tool kit No. A-200-
JD.
Never immerse an alternator in cleaning
solution. When necessary, scrape off most ofthe
dirt and grease, then use a stiff brush and
solvent. Dry with compressed air.
CAUTION: Never hammer or Jar an alterna-
tor or diodes. To do so may ruin the diodes.
Disassemble alternator only as far as nec-
essary to correct the difficulty.

the retract position. As the piston and rod re-
tract into the cylinder, stop rod assembly (6)
moves with the piston and rod until bleed valve

When the cylinder is in the fully retracted
position, it is necessary to provide some manner
of allowing oil to flow to the head of the piston
for the extending stroke. Note in Figure 260-15-
4 that bleed valve (3) is retained on the stop rod
by steel ball (6). The groove at the end of the
stop rod permits movement of stop valve (2) and
bleed valve (3) on the r.od.
When the piston is being extended (Fig. 260-
15-4) from the fully retracted position, incom-
ing oil pressure forces stop valve (2) and bleed
valve (3) against spring (4) opening passage (1).
When piston and rod have extended far enough,
stop (10) moves from stop arm (9). Spring (8)
moves stop arm out and spring (4) holds stop
valve (2) open.

Refer to Figure 260-15-5 for reference in
assembly and disassembly of the remote cylin-
der.
Remove cylinder end cap (18). Remove stop
and bleed valve (13) by pushing stop rod assem-
bly into cylinder to its limit. Pull stop valve
from bleed valve. Do not lose steel ball (12)
which retains bleed valve on stop rod (9). After
removing ball from recess, bleed valve may be
removed from the stop rod.
Insert a rod or bar through yoke attaching pin
hole (34) to hold yoke and rod securely while re-
moving speCial lock nut (21). Remove piston (24)
and rod (34) from cylinder.

Remote Cylinders
(5) seats at the bottom of stop valve (4), stop-
ping oil flow from the cylinder. The control lever
returns to neutral when it is released.
Remove stop rod assembly by driving groove
pin (27) from stop rod arm (28). Push stop rod
(9) all the way into cylinder to prevent distor-
tion of stop rod while driving out groove pin.
Remove piston rod guide (26). Stop rod can
be used to push "V" packing assembly (2) from
housing.
INSPECTION AND REPAIR
Inspect cylinder for scores, cracks, or other
damage.
Inspect piston for cracks, wear, or other
damage. Replace O-ring and back-up rings.
Replace piston rod guide gasket, O-ring and
back-up ring.
Inspect stop rod, stop valve, and bleed valve
for excessive wear or damage. Replace as nec-
essary.
ASSEMBLY
Clean all parts thoroughly in solvent before
assembly.
When assembling the cylinder, always replace
all O-rings, backing rings, gaskets, and "V"
packing.
Install new piston rodO-ring (37) and back-up
ring (36). Back-up ring is installed on the outer
end toward guide.
