Applications of Mathematics in Engineering and Finance/Business

Mathematics is a fundamental part of human thought and logic, and integral to understanding the
world and ourselves. Mathematics provides an effective way of building mental discipline and
encourages logical reasoning and mental rigor. Additionally, mathematical knowledge plays a crucial role
in understanding the contents of other school subjects.

But have you ever wondered as to how math is applied in the real world?

Engineering
We all know that math is a requirement when it comes to Engineering. Math is a core component of
every engineering field and is also widely used for research. In engineering, math is used to design and
develop new components or products, model real-life situations for testing and learning purposes, as
well as build and maintain complex structures. In civic and mechanical engineering, geometry is used to
design structures and ensure that they perform in a safe and meaningful way. When designing a bridge,
civil engineers uses different equations to calculate the approximate size of the supporting piers needed.
They may also use complex mathematical modeling to predict the lifespan of the structure to be
constructed. Industrial engineers use calculus to find the rate at which certain variables will change in a
given operation. They routinely entails making approximations and safe estimations to ensure that all
processes are properly controlled. One or more forms of mathematics are used in these approximations
and estimations.

Business/Finance
Mathematics is an integral part of managing business or finance. It goes hand in hand with business
because it deals with money and money encompasses everything in itself. There is a need for everyone
to manage money at some point especially businesses. Business mathematics is used by commercial
enterprises to record and manage business operations. Commercial organizations use mathematics in
accounting, inventory management, marketing, sales forecasting, and financial analysis. It helps to know
the financial formulas, fractions; measurements involved in interest calculation, hire rates, salary
calculation, tax calculation, etc. which helps complete business tasks efficiently. Businesses also use
statistics to provide solutions to business problems.
