Wettability
 Preference of a solid to be in contact with one fluid
rather than another
 Types:
 Water-wet (hydrophilic)
 Oil-wet (hydrophobic)
 Mixed-wet
 Fractional-wet
 Neutral-wet (intermediate-wet)

 Applications:
 Assigning saturation tables to simulations models (kr,
imbibition Pc)
 Assessing efficiency of secondary and tertiary recoveries
 Assessing potential of formation damage
 Formation evaluation and logging

Relative permeability
 A measure of the ability of a porous medium to
conduct one fluid in the presence of a second or
more fluids

 Represented by the ratio of permeability to one

fluid at a given saturation to a reference
permeability

 The reference permeability could be air

permeability, liquid permeability, or oil
permeability at connate or interstitial water
saturation (IWS)

 is the Lak wettability index

 Sor is the residual oil saturation (ROS)
 Swc is the connate water saturation
 is the water relative permeability at ROS
 CS is the crossover saturation
 RCS is the reference crossover saturation:

Lak wettability index
 Lak wettability index (Ikr) ranges from -1 to +1
 Ikr = -1 Strongly oil-wet
 Ikr = +1 Strongly water-wet

 Ikr > 0: water-wet

 Ikr < 0: oil-wet

Example 1

 Swc = 9.1 %
 Sor = 45.4 %
 Krw@Sor = 0.2
 CS = 38.7 %
 RCS = 31.8 %
 Ikr = 0.32
