A Reflection Paper

Our whole section was tasked by our teacher to handle this certain event–an Immersion
Program for Senior High School students from various schools for a day. In this event, we
showed how crucial skills are for an employee working under a food business establishment.
We performed some skills demonstrations to the students that were related to the Hospitality
Industry, specifically, the Food and Beverage Department. It was overwhelming at first since it’s
our first time handling such event. We did a lot of preparations; in a span of two weeks, we were
divided into teams with designated duties to perform. We did a lot of planning and laid out our
strategies in handling our responsibilities for the big day.
On our assigned day of the Immersion, hundreds of students from different schools attended
and we were all busy assisting them from the registration down to the skills demonstration. We
demonstrated some important skills that are needed in a restaurant such as proper table
service, napkin folding, table skirting, and kitchen tools identification that may benefit the senior
high students in the near future in case they would want to be part of the Hospitality Industry.
We highlighted how important skills were especially in the field of hospitality where ‘customer’s
delight’ is very important in maintaining a food business. We also imparted to them that a
customer will be most delighted if the employees or crews serving them are skillful and gives
good quality service. Imagine a restaurant that serves good food but in terms of service, the
quality is bad just because their dining employees lack skills. Even if the product of a food
business is great, the experience of the customers will most likely to be bad if the crews serving
them lack skills and aren’t properly trained for the duty.
Skills retention may also be related to the supply chain management in terms of maintaining or
hiring employees that are suited for the job. For instance, an establishment is in need of five
more waiters for the evening shift during a holiday season, exactly five persons had applied but
then, only two out of five is qualified for the job, the other three are inexperienced, lacking skills
and still needed to be trained. Although the management needed five waiters as soon as
possible, they only hired two because the other three lack skills in waitering. That is
understandable since the management cannot risk their reputation by hiring unskillful
employees that may cause trouble to dining customers. Also, that’s a way to save time and
effort that would be spent in training inexperienced employees. Hiring employees with skills is a
must in a food establishment and a way to boost the establishment’s good reviews that may
lead to an increase in revenue. This is what we are trying to imply to the students during the
immersion, the more skills they have the more they are easily to be chosen and get a job.
Although not an easy task, nevertheless, I am still grateful for this experience. I enjoyed helping
students who also dreamt of entering the hospitality industry someday. Apart from having fun,
I've learned a lot of things in terms of skills and how crucial these are in the field of hospitality as
well. I learned that having skills will take me somewhere far and will surely benefit me in terms
of applying for a job. This immersion program not only benefited the senior high school
students, having this event helped me as well to learn new things and realize that having skills
is a must.
