(1) The position of a particle moving along a straight line is defined by the relation x=t3-
9t2+15t+18, where x is in meters and t in seconds.
Find the time, position and acceleration of the particle when its velocity becomes
zero. Ans: (t=1, x=25 cm, a=-12 m/s2)

(2) State D Alembert’s Principle for rectilinear and curvilinear motion.

(3) Differentiate between normal and tangential acceleration.

(4) A car starts from rest on a curved road of radius 250 m and attains a speed of 18 km/h
at the end of 60 sec. while travelling with a uniform acceleration. Find the tangential
and normal accelerations of the car 30 sec. after it started. (Ans. 0.83 m/s2,
2
0.025 m/s )

(5) What is coefficient of restitution? Explain the perfectly elastic and perfectly plastic
impacts.

(6) A sphere of mass 4 kg moving with a velocity of 5 m/s overtakes a sphere of mass 3
kg moving with 4 m/s. If a direct impact takes place find their velocity after the
impact. Take e = 0.5. (Ans: 4.36 m/s, 4.86 m/s )

Q 1. Explain instantaneous centre of rotation? How do we locate it when velocities at two

different points are equal and in same direction?
Q 2. Define general plane motion with examples.
Q 3. A wheel of diameter 1 m rolls without slipping on a flat surface. The centre of the wheel
is moving with a velocity of 10 m/s. Find the velocity of points A, B and C? (Ans:
Va=10 m/s, Vb=20 m/s, Vc=10 m/s)

Q 4- A straight rod AB, 50 cm long has one end B moving with a velocity of 4 m/s and the
other end A moving along a vertical line YO as shown in figure. Find the velocity of
the end A.
