1 INTRODUCTION

Dear Student

Namkelekile! Kenang ka Kgotso! Re a le amogela!

Vho ṱanganedzwa! Namukelekile! Niyemukelwa!
Welkom! Welcome!

We wish to welcome you as a student of General Management (MNG2601) and we trust that you will
have an interesting, stimulating, and successful academic year while you are working through this online
module.

Because this is a fully online module, you will need to use myUnisa to study and complete the learning
activities for this module. Visit the site for MNG2601 on myUnisa frequently. The website for your module
is MNG2601-2023-S1 or MNG2601-2023-S2, depending on your semester of registration.

The Study @ Unisa brochure highlights that myUnisa is your most important study tool. The
myUnisa learning management system is the University’s online campus that will help you communicate
with your lecturers, with other students and with the administrative departments of Unisa. On myUnisa,
you will be able to access resources and information as well as module-specific information. Consult
Study @ Unisa for more information on myUnisa.

Although some information is available in Tutorial Letter 101, you should read all the informative
lessons, such as the “Welcome: Start here” lesson and the “Introduction” lesson. You should also visit
myUnisa regularly, as important information will be communicated to you via the Announcements tool.
We recommend that you log in at least once a week to check for new announcements. You can also
change your myLife e-mail account settings in order to receive the announcement e-mails on your cell
phone.

We advise you to have contact with fellow students. You can form study groups by using the Discussion
Forum tool on the myUnisa e-tutor sites. Alternatively, you may obtain the addresses of fellow students
in your area from the following department:

Directorate: Student Administration and Registration

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION

Unisa has implemented a transformation charter in terms of which the University has placed curriculum
transformation high on the teaching and learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes student-
centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of
teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. All of these will be
phased in at both programme and module levels, and as a result of this you will notice a marked change
in the teaching and learning strategy implemented by Unisa, together with the way in which the content
is conceptualised in your modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at
Unisa in a responsive way within the framework of transformation.

4 LECTURERS AND CONTACT DETAILS

4.1 Lecturers
Refer to Tutorial Letter 101, the brochure Study @ Unisa, the lessons available on myUnisa and all
announcements before contacting us. You will find that much of the information that you need is included
in these documents. If your query pertains directly to any information already provided by these sources,
you will be referred to the applicable document.

Direct all queries about the content of this module to your lecturers. You should have your study
material, module code and student number at hand when you contact the University.

We would prefer you to contact your lecturer by sending an e-mail.

The primary lecturer for this module is Mrs Elsabe Scholtz:

Department: Business Management
Telephone: 012 429 2695
E-mail: MNG2601@unisa.ac.za

Please use only the above e-mail address (MNG2601@unisa.ac.za) when communicating with your
lecturer. Due to the large student numbers in the module, we have a team of lecturers standing by to
assist with the mailbox. Communicating via the mailbox will therefore ensure you receive a response to
your query, even if the primary lecturer, Mrs Scholtz, is not available. Queries regarding the module sent
to mailboxes other than the MNG2601@unisa.ac.za mailbox will not be replied to as it will be assumed
that you also sent the query to the correct MNG2601 mailbox.

Further, take note that in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013, student
queries can only be addressed if sent from a myLife e-mail address. It is therefore crucial that you
activate your myLife mailbox once you are registered. E-mails sent from personal e-mail addresses
will NOT be answered and will simply be referred back to you. We can also only assist you if you clearly
indicate your student number in the e-mail.

TSUNDZUKA (remember): MNG2601 = online module

BEFORE you contact your lecturer, check the MNG2601-2023-S1 or

MNG2601-2023-S2 site for updates on the module.

the University and will remain the official primary e-mail address on record at Unisa. You remain
responsible for the management of this e-mail account.

6.1 First-Year Experience Programme

Many students find the transition from school education to tertiary education stressful. This is also true in
the case of students enrolling at Unisa for the first time. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and e-
learning institution, and it is very different from face-to-face/contact institutions. It is a mega university,
and all our programmes are offered through either blended learning or fully online learning. It is for this
reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students additional/extended support to help them
seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and learning journey with little difficulty and few barriers. We
therefore offer a specialised student support programme to students enrolling at Unisa for the first time –
this is Unisa’s First-Year Experience (FYE) Programme, designed to provide you with prompt and helpful
information about services that the institution offers and how you can access information. The following
FYE services are currently offered:
• FYE website: All the guides and resources you need in order to navigate through your first year
at Unisa can be accessed using the following link: www.unisa.ac.za/FYE.
• FYE e-mails: You will receive regular e-mails to help you stay focused and motivated.
• FYE broadcasts: You will receive e-mails with links to broadcasts on various topics related to
your first-year studies (e.g. videos on how to submit assessments online).
• FYE mailbox: For assistance with queries related to your first year of study, send an e-mail to
fye@unisa.ac.za.

6.2 E-tutors
The role of an e-tutor is to facilitate learning and guide you through the learning process, thus enabling
you to gain knowledge and understanding of the content and acquire the skills necessary to cope with
your studies. The e-tutors will assist you to become a self-directed learner in line with the Unisa open
distant learning (ODL) philosophy. The University, not the lecturers, allocates e-tutors to you. You will
receive information about your e-tutor via your myLife mailbox. Be patient and DO NOT CONTACT
YOUR LECTURERS in this regard, as they cannot assist you.

All e-tutors will post tutorials on myUnisa and all registered students (who have settled their accounts) in
the General Management module will have access to the tutorials. The tutorials are aligned with the
module study plan presented in this tutorial letter. Use the e-tutors to gain maximum benefit for your

9
studies. Consult them on matters about the content of the module, ask them to explain theory that you
find difficult to understand and contact them with questions that you find difficult.

6.3 Translated terms

On myUnisa, under the Resources tab, you will find a list of the key terms used in the module,
translated in all the official languages of South Africa.

6.4 Predatory providers of classes and examination support

Please be aware of the existence of multiple fraudulent and predatory providers of classes and
examination guidance to Unisa students. Please note that Unisa does not have agreements with any of
these agencies/schools/colleges to provide tuition or support to our students. Unisa also does not
provide these predators with study material, guidelines or your contact information.

These providers may not have the necessary expertise to assist you and often charge exorbitant fees. If
you receive an invitation from any agency or college, it is best to confirm with your lecturer if the provider
is a legitimate Unisa partner.

6.5 TVET agreements

Unisa does, however, have agreements with a number of TVET colleges to provide contact tuition and
support for students in the following higher certificates:
• Higher Certificate in Economic and Management Sciences
• Higher Certificate in Banking
• Higher Certificate in Tourism
• Higher Certificate in Accounting Sciences
More information on TVET colleges is available here:
https://www.unisa.ac.za/sites/corporate/default/Apply-for-admission/TVET-colleges.

6.6 Access to the internet

Having access to a reliable, internet-connected device like a computer, tablet or smartphone is crucial for
completing MNG2601. If you struggle with internet access, you should consult
http://www.unisa.ac.za/telecentres for a list of telecentres and internet cafes where you can connect to
myUnisa for free. Alternatively, you can visit any of the Unisa regional centres and book time in the
computer laboratory. Lastly, you can always take your own device to a regional centre and connect to
the Unisa Student Wi-Fi for free.

7 HOW TO STUDY ONLINE

7.1 What does it mean to study fully online?

Studying fully online modules differs completely from studying some of your other modules at Unisa.
• All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed to be
delivered online on myUnisa.
• All your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you do all your activities and
submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post your assignments to
Unisa using the South African Post Office.
• All communication between you and the University happens online. Lecturers will
communicate with you via e-mail and SMS, and use the Announcements, the Discussion Forums
and the Questions and Answers tools. You can also use all of these platforms to ask questions
and contact your lecturers.

10
MNG2601/101/3/2023

7.2 myUnisa tools

The main tool that we will use is the Lessons tool. This tool will provide the content of and the
assessments for your module. At times you will be directed to join discussions with fellow students and
complete activities and assessments before you can continue with the module.
It is very important that you log in to myUnisa regularly. We recommend that you log in at least once a
week to do the following:
• Check for new announcements. You can also set your myLife e-mail account so that you receive
the announcement e-mails on your cellphone.
• Do the Discussion Forum activities (e-tutor sites). When you do the activities for each lesson, we
want you to share your answers with the other students in your group. You can read the instructions
and even prepare your answers offline, but you will need to go online to post your messages.

We hope that by giving you extra ways to study the material and practise all the activities, you will
succeed in the online module. To get the most out of the online module, you MUST go online regularly to
complete the activities and assignments on time.

8 ASSESSMENT

8.1 Assessment approach

This module will make use of a continuous assessment approach. This approach aims to make you, the
learner, more aware of your progress and quality of learning. This is done by testing your competencies
throughout the semester using a variety of assessments. It further aims to, somewhat, relieve the stress
of completing one assessment at the end of the semester that could determine whether you pass or fail.
With a continuous assessment approach there is no supplementary opportunity, therefore ensure that
you submit all assignments and study sufficiently before completing each assignment.

TSUNDZUKA (remember): MNG2601 = continuous assessment

There will be NO examination and NO supplementary opportunity.

8.2 Assessment plan

As part of the continuous assessment approach, you will be required to complete six multiple-choice
question assignments which will test your overall knowledge of the lessons and prescribed book and
your ability to apply the theory to a practical situation.

Assignments are available in their own tab on the left-hand side on your myUnisa main module site. To
access the assignment, click on the tab of the assignment you want to complete. Be sure to read the
instructions on the assignment cover page before starting your assignment attempt.

Instructions regarding online assignments:

• All assignments are individual assignments. The answers given must be YOUR answers.
• Once you begin the assignment, your timed attempt commences, you can therefore not start the
assignment, close it (perhaps to search for the answers), and then reopen the assignment. Once the
assignment was begun you are advised to answer all the questions and submit the assignment in
one go.
• The time limit for each assignment will be indicated on the assignment cover page. Also, bear in
mind that myUnisa times out after some time of inactivity (and will automatically submit the attempt
you were busy with).

11
• The number of attempts will be indicated on the assignment cover page. For most, two submissions
are allowed (hence you have two chances). This is especially for students who experience technical
issues while submitting assignments. Second attempts should only be used if you experienced
issues. The HIGHEST scored submission will be considered when calculating your final mark.
• Assignments must be submitted on/before the due date and due time.
• If you experience any problems accessing the assignment OR while submitting the assignment (i.e.
an error message or system error), take a screenshot of the issue and contact your lecturers
immediately with the screenshot(s) attached. DO NOT take a photo of the error message as we
need the screenshot to include the date, time and you as the logged-in user to verify the system
error. If you are unable to take a screenshot, you must ensure the photo includes the whole
screen (date, time and user as well) and is clear and legible. If not, the photo will not be accepted.
• It is not advisable to use a cell phone to complete the quiz. Please use a desktop computer, tablet or
laptop when completing the quiz. Students who use a cell phone find it difficult to navigate the
Online Assessment tool on the small screen and often struggle to navigate between questions and
successfully complete the quizzes. In addition, cell phones are more vulnerable to dropped internet
connections than other devices. If at all possible, please do not use a cell phone for this
assessment type.
• Queries beyond Unisa’s control include the following:
a. Personal network or service provider issues
b. Load shedding/power outages
c. Limited space on personal computer
c. Crashed computer
d. Using work computers that block access to the myUnisa site (work firewall challenges)
e. Unlicensed software (e.g. license expires during assignment)
Preventing these issues from disrupting submission of your assignment remains your
responsibility as the student. This is another reason to ensure you submit your assignments well
before the due date. Should any of these issues occur, you still have time to make alternative
arrangements to complete the assignment.

Each assignment will contribute to your final mark. You need to obtain a year mark average of 50% for
the assignments to pass the module. The assignment weighting for the module is available below:

Assignment number Weight Compulsory/elective

Assignment 01 11% Compulsory
Assignment 02 12% Compulsory
Assignment 03 12% Compulsory
Assignment 04 15% Compulsory
Assignment 05 25% Compulsory
Assignment 06 25% Compulsory

8.3 Assignment due dates

The assignment due dates will be available on the cover page of each assignment (when you access the
tab for the assignment on the main module site). You are therefore encouraged to access each
assignment at the start of the semester, and read the information, instructions and due date for
submission at the beginning of the semester.

Note that you are welcome and encouraged to submit your assignments as soon as you have
worked through the applicable lessons and feel comfortable with what you have learnt. You do

12
MNG2601/101/3/2023

not need to wait for an assignment’s due date to submit the assignment – in fact, this is cautioned
against.

As a Unisa student you may have experienced problems with technology in the past. We all know that
you can never rely on technology 100%. There are system downtimes and there are times the system
gets overloaded with students submitting their assignments and you will not be able to access the site to
submit your assignment. Should you wait until the due date to submit, you stand the chance of finding an
overloaded system (as all other students are trying to submit). It is not only technology that is
unpredictable. Life can throw you many curve balls such as illness, death of a family member or being
overburdened at work. Therefore, HEED THIS WARNING, do NOT wait until the last day to submit
your assignment. Try and work according to the proposed study programme in Tutorial Letter 101 or
one you have compiled yourself. No extension CAN be given once these due dates have passed.

Also, take note of the submission times. Previously assignments could be submitted until midnight;
however, for this module assignments are to be submitted on the due date by 20:00. Once again, no
extension CAN be given if the submission time has passed.

HOPOLA (remember): MNG2601 = online module

Visit the MNG2601-2023-S1 or MNG2601-2023-S2 site for updates on the

assignment due dates.

Please start working on your assignments as soon as you register for the module. Remember, it
remains the responsibility of the students to ensure they submit all their assignments on time. If
you miss an assignment due date and do not submit the assignment, you will receive 0% for the
assignment and you forfeit the percentage in weight contributed to your final mark. You are given
all the information and tools to complete your assignments on time.

8.4 Assignments and feedback

Each assignment is considered to be a vital part of the learning material for this module. You will receive
feedback on all your assignments about a week after the assignment due date – this will be provided by
accessing the assignment attempts you submitted (feedback will be provided with each question). As
soon as you receive the feedback, you must check your answers. Self-assessment is a crucial skill that
you need to acquire during your university studies. It means being critical of your own work and trying to
understand where marks were lost and why. Self-assessment of your work will also be able to indicate
where you need to put in additional effort before attempting the next assignment requiring that content.
You are therefore encouraged to self-assess your assignment answers as soon as the feedback tutorial
letters are published.

8.5 The examination

As the module follows a continuous assessment approach, there will be no examination.

9 STUDY PLAN

Each lesson corresponds to a specific chapter in the prescribed book. The applicable chapter is
indicated at the beginning of each lesson. It is essential to use both the lessons and the prescribed book
when studying. The main purpose of the lessons and tutorial letter is to guide you through the learning
material in the prescribed book.

9.1 How to study for this module

You must have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant theory and concepts. This will allow you
to apply the theory in application-type questions. This module is not difficult; however, you must study
and master a great deal of theory and you must prepare well in advance. We suggest the following:
• Start with the lessons, scan through the units and take note of the chapters you need to study/refer
to.
• Read the lessons and the respective chapters.
• Do the activities in the tutorials posted by e-tutors, the activities in the prescribed book and those in
the lessons of the main module site.
• Memorise the theory in the prescribed book, supplemented by your own notes and summaries.
• For revision: Do the multiple-choice questions from the mock assignment without consulting the
study material.
• For revision: Mark your own work (search for the answers in the prescribed book) and focus on the
theory of the questions that you got wrong.

The assignments are compiled from the prescribed book and the lessons for this module, and not from
previous assignments or your summaries. You therefore need to have a comprehensive understanding
of the theory covered in MNG2601. When you prepare for the assignments, do not leave out any lessons
covered in that assignment (and the relevant chapters in the prescribed book).

Finally, do not underestimate the volume of the work. This module is not difficult to study, but you must
prepare well in advance because of the volume of work that you need to master before the end of the
semester.
