1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student,
Welcome to ONLINE module: Principles of Management Accounting (MAC2601). We hope you
will find it interesting and rewarding. We will do our best to help you complete this module
successfully. You will be well on your way to success if you start studying early in the semester
and resolve to do the assignments properly.
Teaching and learning in a CODeL context involves multiple modes of delivery ranging from
blended learning to fully online. As a default position, all post graduate programmes are
offered fully online with no printed study materials, while undergraduate programmes are
offered in a blended mode of delivery where printed study materials are augmented with
online teaching and learning via the learner management system – myUnisa. In some
instances, undergraduate programmes are offered fully online as well.
Furthermore, our programmes are aligned with the vision, mission and values of the

2 MODULE OVERVIEW
2.1 Purpose
This module is mainly intended for people who are interested in registering as chartered
accountants with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) or management
accountants with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). The module will
enable students to develop some of the competencies that these organisations require.
The purpose of this module is to:
• Give students a basic knowledge of cost classification, cost behaviour, cost analysis, cost
estimation, cost objects and cost management accounting systems.
• Enable students to understand and apply planning, budgeting and control techniques.
• Enable students to understand how financial and other data are analysed in order to provide
information for decision-making.
This module is delivered using myUnisa, the internet as well as peer group interaction. Your
lecturers will interact with you on myUnisa and via e-mail.
2.2 Outcomes
3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In
response to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and
learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred
scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of
teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These
pillars and their principles will be integrated at both programme and module levels as a phased-
in approach. You will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning strategy
implemented by Unisa, together with how the content is conceptualised in your modules. We
encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a responsive way
within the framework of transformation.

Many students find the transition from school education to tertiary education stressful. This is
also true in the case of students enrolling at Unisa for the first time. Unisa is a dedicated open
distance and e-learning institution, and it is very different from face-to-face/contact institutions. It
is a mega university, and all our programmes are offered through either blended learning or fully
online learning. It is for this reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students
additional/extended support to help them seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and learning
journey with little difficulty and few barriers. We therefore offer a specialised student support
programme to students enrolling at Unisa for the first time – this is Unisa’s First-Year
Experience (FYE) Programme, designed to provide you with prompt and helpful information
about services that the institution offers and how you can access information. The following FYE
services are currently offered:
• FYE website: All the guides and resources you need in order to navigate through your

7. STUDY PLAN
The study Study material is available on myUnisa on registration. Tutorial Letters 101 (this
letter) as well as the brochure, Study @ Unisa brochure available on myUnisa:

www.unisa.ac.za/brochures/studies , must all be read before you commence with the study
units.
Since this is an online module you can immediately start working through the learning units in
your study guide available on myUnisa. While working through the study units in your study
guide on myUnisa, make sure that you understand the principles so that you will be able to
apply them in the different scenarios in the assignment questions.
Because this is an online module, the assignment questions are not provided in this
tutorial letter. Instead, they will be posted on myUnisa MAC2601 site as they become due,
and you will see them when you go online.
We work on the principle that all the assignments are submitted online and will reach Unisa
immediately. You must submit all your assignments online via myUnisa on the due dates that
will be made available to you on the landing page of myUnisa for this module.
We envisage that the due dates and the detailed study programme will be available to you on
myUnisa upon registration. The study program is based on the assumption that learners devote
eight hours of study time per week for each module.
Blended studying mode means the mode of tuition is a combination of online studying and
receiving some printed copies of the study material. Studying fully online modules differs
completely from studying some of your other modules at Unisa.
• All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed
to be delivered online on myUnisa. Although we give you a printed copy to support
your studies, the module is designed to be delivered online.
• All of your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you submit all
your assignments on myUnisa and that you may NOT post your assignments to
Unisa, using the South African Post Office or any other postal services.
• All of the communication between you and the University happens online.
Lecturers will communicate to you by e-mail and using the Announcements and the
Discussion Forums tools. You can also use all of these modes to ask questions and
contact your lecturers. Unisa and/or the lecturers may also send important SMSs to
you from time to time; it is, therefore, important to make sure Unisa has your updated
contact (mobile phone) details.
• It is very important that you log in to myUnisa regularly. We recommend that you log
in at least twice a week to check for any updates, announcements, and new additional
resources.
9. ASSESSMENT
9.1 Assessment criteria
As MAC2601 will incorporate continuous assessment from 2023, there will be five assessments
per semester. There will be no examination on this module, but the last assessment is
mandatory to pass the module.

We strongly advise you to submit all assessments before the due dates as they test your
knowledge and understanding of the concepts taught in this module. Each assessment will also
contribute to your semester mark.

The assessments will be uploaded on Moodle for your reference and are therefore not included
in this tutorial letter.
9.2 Assessment plan
• Assignment due dates will be made available to you on the myUnisa landing page for this
module. We envisage that the due dates will be available to you upon registration.
• Please start working on your assessments as soon as you register for the module.
• Log on to the myUnisa site for this module to obtain more information on the due dates
for the submission of the assessments.
• The myUnisa virtual campus will offer students access to the myModules site, where
learning material will be available online and where assessments should be completed.

This is an online system that is used to administer, document, and deliver educational
material to students and support engagement between academics and students.
• When you access your myModules site for the module/s you are registered for, you will
see a welcome message posted by your lecturer. Below the welcome message you will
see the assessment shells for the assessments that you need to complete. Some
assessments may be multiple choice, some tests, others written assessments, some
forum discussions, and so on. All assessments must be completed on the assessment
shells available on the respective module platforms.
• To complete quiz assessments, please log on to the module site where you need to
complete the assessment. Click on the relevant assessment shell (Assessment 1,
Assessment 2, etc.). There will be a date on which the assessment will open for you.
When the assessment is open, access the quiz online and complete it within the time
available to you. Quiz assessment questions are not included in this tutorial letter
(Tutorial Letter 101) and are only made available online. You must therefore access the
quiz online and complete it online where the quiz has been created.
• It is not advisable to use a cell phone to complete the quiz. Please use a desktop
computer, tablet or laptop when completing the quiz. Students who use a cell phone find
it difficult to navigate the Online Assessment tool on the small screen and often struggle
to navigate between questions and successfully complete the quizzes. In addition, cell
phones are more vulnerable to dropped internet connections than other devices. If at all
possible, please do not use a cell phone for this assessment type.
• For written assessments, please note the due date by which the assessment must be
submitted. Ensure that you follow the guidelines given by your lecturer to complete the
assessment. Click on the submission button on the relevant assessment shell on
myModules. You will then be able to upload your written assessment on the myModules
site of the modules that you are registered for. Before you finalise the upload, double
check that you have selected the correct file for upload. Remember, no marks can be
allocated for incorrectly submitted assessments.
As indicated in section 9.2, you need to complete FIVE assessments for this module.

There are no assessments included in this tutorial letter. Assignments and due dates will be
made available to you on myModules for this module. We envisage that the due dates will be
available to you upon registration.
Note: There is no formal examination nor supplementary examination for this module. The
marks obtained for all five compulsory assessments contribute 100% towards your final mark.
The combined weighted averages of your assessment marks must be 50% or higher for you to
pass the module. Below is an example of how your final mark is calculated:
• Copying and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
• Not including references or deliberately inserting incorrect bibliographic information.
• Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.
10.2 Cheating
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

student must prepare and submit his or her own individual assessment. It is unacceptable for
students to submit identical assessment solutions on the basis that they worked together. This
is regarded as copying (a form of plagiarism) and none of these assessments will be marked.
Furthermore, you will be penalised and will be subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the
University.
Note that plagiarism is taken very seriously on the module, and disciplinary action will be
initiated against any student suspected of plagiarism in the assessments.
By submitting any MAC2601 assessment, you automatically declare that you adhere to the
following regarding the specific submission:
You must do you own work to ensure that you correctly understand the concepts taught on this
module. As you progress with your studies, these concepts will be built on and therefore you
need a solid foundation.

(human) internal or external marker. Marks are captured as individual assignments are marked
and therefore not released all at once for all the students registered for the module as with other
assignments. It can take more than two weeks after the due date for your marks for written
assignments to become available. If you, however, suspect that your assignment was not
received by the University, etc., please contact Student Assessment Administration urgently.
Q: What do I do if I do not agree with my written assignment mark?
A: Please e-mail a copy of your marked and returned assignment to
MAC2601-23-S1@unisa.ac.za (for first semester) and MAC2601-23-S2@unisa.ac.za (for
second semester), clearly indicating with what and why you do not agree. The lecturers will
investigate whether your marks need to be adjusted or not.
