1
Question 1: (10 marks) Below are the numbers of slot machines in each of Alberta’s 16
casinos

271 284 428 600 400 158 200 256

344 142 142 50 181 200 204 180

a. (4 marks) Report the five-number summary.

Solution: Ordered data - 50 142 142 158 180 181 200 200 204 256 271 284 344 400
428 600
5-number summary - 50, 169, 202, 314, 600

b. (5 marks) Obtain the modified boxplot and clearly label the mild outliers and extreme
outliers (if any).
Solution: IQR=145, Inner fence = (-48.5, 531.5), Outer fence = (-266, 749). Then
600 is an outlier. Can draw the boxplot with the right whiskers go up to 418 and then
600 is indicated as an outlier.

c. (1 mark) It is given that the total number of slot machines in the 16 casinos of Alberta
is 4040. What is the average number of slot machines in a casino in Alberta?
Solution: average = 4040/16 = 252.5

2
Question 2: (10 marks) A Cornell University researcher measured the mouth volumes of
a large number of men and women and reported that the distribution of the mouth volumes
for men is approximately bell-shaped with a mean of 66 cc and a standard deviation of
17 cc. Moreover, the distribution of the mouth volumes for women is also approximately
bell-shaped with a mean of 54 cc and a standard deivation of 14.5 cc.

a. (4 marks) The man with the largest mouth has a mouth volume of 111.2 cc. The
woman with the largest mouth had a mouth volume of 95.8 cc. Who had the more
extraordinarily large mouth?
Solution: z-score for man = (111.2-66)/17 = 2.6588, z-score for woman = (95.8-
54)/14.5 = 2.8828. Since the 2.8828 > 2.6588, therefore, the woman has a more
extraordinarily large mouth.

b. (3 marks) Applying the Empirical Rule, what percentage of man has mouth volume
over 100 cc or less than 49 cc?
Solution: Since 100 is 2 standard deviations above the mean and 49 is 1 standard
deviation below the mean. Therefore, the required percentage is 16%+2.5% =18.5%.

c. (3 marks) Applying the Empirical Rule, what is the mouth volume that is exceeded
by 0.15% of all men?
Solution: The required mouth volume is 3 standard deviations above the mean and is
117

Question 3: (10 marks) Research concerning purchasing habits at the grocery store
suggests that impulse buys make up approximately 60% of all purchases. Suppose 100
customers are selected at random.

a. (4 marks) Find the mean and variance of the number X of customers who make an
impulse purchase.
Solution µ = np = 100(.6) = 60, σ 2 = np(1 − p) = 100(.4)(.6) = 24

X
b. (3 marks) Find the variance of p̂ = n.
p(1−p) .6(.4)
Solution: varp̂ = n = 100 = .0024

c. (3 marks) Find the probability that at most one customer makes an impulse purchase.
100 100 100 99
Solution 0 (.4) ++ 1 (.6)(.4) ∼0

Question 4: (10 marks) The mean age of patients undergoing surgery in a study was
60.4 years with a standard deviation of 7.5 years. Suppose the distribution of the age of
patients is normal and one patient is selected at random.

a. (5 marks) Find the probability that the patient is between 60 and 65 years old.
Solution: P (60 < X < 65) = P ((60 − 60.4)/7.5 < Z < (65 − 60.4)/7.5) = P (−0.053 <
Z < 0.613) = P (−0.05 < Z < 0.61) = 0.7291 − 0.4801 = 0.249

b. (5 marks) Find an age a that 90% of all patients are less than a years old.
Solution:P (X < a) = P (Z < (a − 60.4)/7.5) = 0.9 = P (Z < 1.28), so a = 1.28 ∗ 7.5 +
60.4 = 70 or using the bottom of table III, a = 1.2816 ∗ 7.5 + 60.4 = 70.01

5
Question 5: (10 marks) The probability distribution for a random variable X is given in
the following table.

x -20 -10 0 10 20
p(x) 0.30 0.15 0.10 0.15 0.30

a. (5 marks) Find the mean µ and variance σ 2 of X.

Solution: mean=0, variance=270, σ = 16.43

b. (5 marks) Find P (µ − 2σ ≤ X ≤ µ + 2σ).

Solution: P (−32.86 ≤ X ≤ 32.86) = 1
