This 3-step procedure describes how to aggressively clean a Drew Scientific hematology analyzer. It involves: 1) emptying the waste container and disconnecting the 3 pickup tubes, placing 1 in a bleach solution and the others in water, 2) running two prime cycles while moving the tubes between the solutions, 3) verifying acceptable background counts before running controls.

1. Before beginning this procedure, empty the Waste
container. Verify that it is not above the level of the unit and the tubing is not pinched. 2. Disconnect the three pickup tubes from the reagent kit one at a time. A. Place the Diluent line into a clean container filled with 50% bleach/distilled water solution. B. Place the other two lines in a clean container of distilled water. 2. Run a Prime cycle. 4. When Prime cycle is complete, with out delay remove the Diluent line from the bleach, carefully wipe the outside of the straw dry and dab the end to introduce a pocket of air. Then place this in the container of distilled water with the other two pickup tubes. 5. Run a Prime cycle. 6. When this Prime cycle is complete, remove the pickup tubes one at a time from the water container. Wipe the outside of the straw dry, dab the end to introduce a pocket of air and place in the appropriate reagent kit bottle. 7. With all the pickup tubes back in their correct reagent bottle, run a Prime cycle then do the Start Up cycle. 8. Verify the background counts are acceptable then proceed to running the controls.
