Procedure

1. Before you plug in the Trainer, make sure the

Trainer is turned off and all the control knobs are
in their fully counterclockwise (CCW) positions.

2. Install Circuit Board #1 into the Backpack, if this

has not already been done. First align the circuit
board with the slots in the upright circuit board
holders. Then firmly slide the board down until it
is securely seated in the bottom connectors. Be
careful to align the connectors and do not force the
circuit board or you may damage the circuit board
and/or the Trainer.

3. If the test leads are not already connected to the

multimeter, connect them now. Connect the red
test lead to the Volt terminal and the black test lead
to the Common terminal. Set up the multimeter to

measure DC voltages of at least 15 volts.

What positions must you set the function and range

switches to?

FUNCTION : .......

RANGE : ......

Note: Your meter might be an autorangins type which does

not have a range switch. There might be additional
functions such as transistor and capacitor checkers or
temperature probes,
that wi11 not be used in this course. The point is that, we
can't tell you exactly how to set up your meter. If you need
help installing the test leads and setting up the meter,
check with your Instructor.

What is important, Is that you select the function that

matches what you are attempting to measure, whether it be
resistance, current, AC voltage, or DC voltage, etc. Also,
that you choose a range that is higher than the value that
you expect to measure.

When in doubt, always choose the highest range possible,

and then reduce the setting to obtain a more precise
reading.

For example, if you were told to prepare the meter to

measure 25-volts AC, you would select the AC Volts
function and the range that will accept 25 volts without
overanging the display, typically the 200-Volt range.

4. Attach the negative (black) ground lead or the

multimeter to the GND terminal in the interface
block. Similarly, attach the positive (red) input lead
of the multimeter to the +V power supply terminal
on the interface block. Switch Trainer power ON.

5. Switch Circuit Board # I power ON. With the+ voltage

control fully CCW. measure the voltage output. Set

the multimeter to the lowest DC voltage range that
will allow you to measure the voltage without
driving your meter into an overrange condition.
Record your reading in the table in Figure 1-3. (If
you moved the voltage range switch to a lower
setting, return it to the 20V position.)

6. Then measure the voltage output with control

knob set 1/3 CW, 2/3 CW, and fully CW. Also
record your readings in the table in Figure 1-3.

7. Refer to the table in Figure J.4 and measure the
negative voltages indicated, and record your
readings. when you finish, switch Circuit Board #l
and the Trainer OFF. Also disconnect the meter
leads from the power supply terminals
