 Each listed item on this task card is to be performed in accordance with the electronics concepts
Maintenance Manual or other applicable HEATHKIT EC-1000 1 and 2

TOOLS REQUIREMENT
• 1 ETW-7000 Analog/Digital Trainer
From the EC-1000-60 parts pack:
• 1 Circuit Board #1
• 1 Red jumper wire
• 1 Black jumper wire

Procedure

1. On the ETW-7000 Trainer, turn both voltage controls

fully coun- terclockwise (CCW). Plug in the AC line cord
of the Trainer. Install Circuit Board #1 into the Backpack,
if this has not already been done. Use the same
procedure as you did in the previous exercise.

2. If the test leads are not already connected to the

multimeter, connect them now. Be sure to connect the
red test lead to the red terminal, and the black test lead
to the black terminal. You will measure DC current in
this exercise, so select the multimeter's mA function.

3. Set the meter's to measure about 100 mA of DC current.

4. Locate Block 2. Also locate the +V voltage supply output
and ground (GND) terminals in the interface block.

5. Refer to Figure 2-2 and use the red jumper wire to

connect the +V output terminal from the interface block
to terminal +V in Block 2.

6. Similarly, use the black jumper wire to connect the GND

terminal from the interface block to GND in Block 2.

7. Attach the black (ground) test lead of the multimeter to

P23. Connect the red (input) test lead of the multimeter
to P21.
You have just completed a simple series circuit which
consists of a 15 ohm resistor (R22), a one foot length of
coiled copper wire, and an ammeter (A1).

NOTE: The circuit board is labeled "A1" where you will

make your first current measurement in the following
steps. This, and the other exercise blocks are labeled to
show you where to connect your test equipment to
make the proper measurements. The first letter or
letters is an abbreviation of the test equipment: "AC"
indicates a multimeter measurement of an AC voltage,
"V" for your meter set up to measure a DC voltage, "A"
for your meter set up to measure current, or "OSC" for
your oscilloscope. A "V" or "H" following "OSC" shows
where either the vertical or horizontal input probe of
the scope is to be connected (sometimes the horizontal
input is actually a scope's second vertical input). The
letter "G" shows where the ground lead of the scope is
connected in the circuit. A 1, 2, or 3 following the
equipment abbreviation shows that it is the first,
second, or third measurement of that type made in the
exercise. For example, A1 is the first current
measurement that you will make in this exercise.

8. Now switch the Trainer power ON. The Trainer's red
power LED will light.

9. Use the switch in the lower left corner of Board #1 to

turn the Board power ON. The red power LED in the
upper left corner of the Board will light.

10. Adjust the ETW-7000 Trainer's POWER SUPPLY positive

voltage control until the meter indicates 80
milliamperes. A setting within +2 mA on the display is
acceptable.

11. Switch the Circuit Board power OFF. The red power LED
on the Board will go out.

12. Move the red meter test lead from P21 to P22
(ammeter position A2). This removes the copper wire
from your series circuit and installs one foot of coiled
nichrome wire in its place.

13. Switch the Circuit Board power ON, Observe the current
indication on the meter and record it below. The current
through R21 and one foot of nichrome wire is mA.
Did the reading change? (yes)
Is this current greater than, less than, or equal to the
current in Step 10?
With equal voltage applied, which conducts more
current, copper or nichrome?
Switch Board #1 power OFF. Then, switch the Trainer
power OFF. Remove both jumper wires and disconnect
the meter test leads from Board #1.
