C. Electrical Requirements: The equipment shall operate from a voltage sources as
required plus or minus 6 percent, and 50 Hz, plus or minus 4 percent.
D. Power Line Surge Protection: All equipment connected to ac circuits shall be

IEEE C62.41. Fuses shall not be used for surge protection.
E. Communication Links Surge Protection: All communications equipment shall be

conductors which serve as communications links between control units shall have
surge protection circuits installed at each end. Protection shall be furnished at
equipment and within 1 meter of each wire line circuit building entrance.
Protection shall consist of triple electrode gas surge protectors rated for the
application. Fuses shall not be used for surge protection. The links shall be tested
in both normal mode and common mode using the following two waveforms.
1. A 10 microsecond by 1000 microsecond waveform with a peak voltage of
1500 volts and a peak of 60 amperes.
2. An 8 microsecond by 20 microsecond waveform with a peak voltage of
1000 volts and peak current of 500 amperes.
F. Communications Links Overvoltage Protection: All communication equipment
shall be protected against overvoltage longer than 2 milliseconds on any
communication link. All cables and conductors which serve as communication
links shall have overvoltage protection for voltages up to 480 V ac rms. 50 Hz
installed. Instrument fuses or fusible resistors are acceptable for this application.
G. Communications Equipment: Communications equipment shall be capable of
transmitting data within the error rate specified by the relevant standard over the
distances shown.
1. Line Drivers: Line drivers shall be capable or signal levels to transmit
data at the same speed of the selected local area network.
H. Digital Transmission Media: Wire line cable shall be insulated solid copper type
conforming to the following specifications. A minimum of No. 22 AWG shall be
used for all applications except where otherwise noted.
1. Underground Cable.
2. Interior Cable. ICEA S-80-576
I. Raceway Systems: Raceways systems as specified in Section 16050 BASIC
ELECTRICAL MATERISL AND METHODS.
J. Communications between individual DDCs inside each building shall be via a

failures will not cause loss of communications with other bus connected devices.
Each bus of the communications network must be capable of supporting
minimum of 30 devices.
K. The DDC communications network shall support true peer protocol allowing
sensor sharing, inter DDC event programs and global application programs
without the presence of a host processor. Each DDC shall have equal rights for

1. Every DDC must be capable of transmitting a message to another DDC as
well as to all DDC’s on the bus.
2. All messages transmitted must be positively acknowledge as received or
negatively acknowledge as not received. Negative acknowledgements
shall immediately force a retransmission of the message.
3. Bus connected devices with no messages to transmit must send an “I am
OK” message each bus cycle. Lack of an “I am OK” message after
successive retries shall constitute a communications or device failure and
be recognized as such by the bus and shall be recorded as not responding
on the system printer.
