SECTION – A (Reading Skills)
Q1.Read the passage given below: 10 marks

We are what we eat. The type of food we eat has both immediate and long-term effects on us, at
all the three levels - the body, the mind and the spirit. Food which is tamasik (i.e. stale or
leftover) in nature is bound to generate stress as it tends to upset the normal functioning of the
human body. Fresheners should be avoided. Taking piping hot tea/milk or steaming hot food,
whenever available, must be preferred. Excessive use of condiments also disturbs one’s usually
calm attitude. Further, it is a mistaken belief that smoking or drinking, even in moderation,
relieves stress. Simple meals with one or two food items, rather than too many lavish dishes, are
advisable. Thus, a vegetarian diet is preferable. Although it is customary to serve fruits with
food, it is not the right thing to do. This is because different kinds of digestive secretions are
produced by the stomach for variant foods. Mixing up too many varieties of food items at one
meal creates problems for the digestive system. In fact, any one type of fruit, preferably taken in
the morning, is better.
On an average, we eat almost three to four times the quantity of food than we actually need. A
lot of the body's energy is used up for digesting the excess food. It is said that after a particular
level of food intake, the ‘food actually eats one up’.
It is always good to eat a little less than your ‘full-stomach’ capacity. Besides, never eat food
unless you are really hungry. To have dinner at 8 or 9 pm after a heavy snack at 5 or 6 pm in the
evening is asking for trouble. In fact, skipping an odd meal is always good if the stomach is
upset. There are varying views on the benefits of fasting, but we will not discuss them. However,
giving a break to one’s stomach, at least once a week, by having only fruit or milk, etc. may be
worth trying.
While a little bit of water taken with meals is all right, drinking 30 to 60 ml much water with
food is not advisable. Water, taken an hour or so before or after meals, is good for digestion.
One’s diet must be balanced with all the required nutrients for a healthy living.
Also remember, excess of everything is bad. Related to the problem of stress, excessive intake
of salt is definitely out. Too much sugar, fried food and chillies are not good either.
Overindulgence and excessive craving for a particular taste/type of food generates rajasik
(aggressive) or at worst, tamasik (dull) tendencies. An even more important aspect of the
relationship between food and stress lies not so much in what or how much we eat but how the
food is taken. For example, food eaten in great hurry or in a state of anger or any other negative

Pg 1
state of mind is bound to induce stress. How the food is served is also very important. Not only
the presentation, cutlery, crockery, etc. play a role, the love and affection with which the food is
served is also significant. Finding faults with food while it is being eaten is the worst habit. It is
better not to eat the food you do not like, rather than finding fault with it.
It is good to have regular food habits. Workaholics who do not find time to eat food at proper
meal times invite stomach ulcers. One must try to enjoy one’s food, and therefore, eating at the
so-called lunch/dinner meetings is highly inadvisable. Every morsel of food should be enjoyed
with a totally peaceful state of mind. Food and discussions should not be mixed. There are
accepted ways to charge the food we eat. Prayer is perhaps the best method for energizing the
food and it will do some definite additional good at no extra cost.

Q2. Read the passage given below: 8 marks
Nearly 25 percent of India’s total land area is now under forest and tree cover. However, there
is still a long way to go – more than a decade, admits the government – before India reaches its
target of having 33 percent of its total area under forest and tree cover. However, there is still a
long way to go – more than a decade, admits the government – before India reaches its target of
having 33 percent of its total area under forest and tree cover. The latest ‘India State of Forest
Report (ISFR 2019) released by the country’s Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on
December 30, 2019, revealed that the total forest and tree cover of the country is 807,276 square
kilometers (which is 24.56 percent of the geographical area of the country).
As per the report, “forest cover” includes all tree patches which have canopy density more than
10 percent and area of one hectare or more in size, irrespective of their legal status and species
composition. The term “Recorded Forest Area” (RFA) is used for lands which have been notified
as “forest” under any government Act or rules or recorded as “forest” in the government records.

Pg 2
The report noted that the gain in forest cover or improvement in forest canopy density may be
attributed to better conservation measures, protection, afforestation activities, tree plantation
drives and agroforestry whereas, loss in forest cover and impairment of forest canopy may be
attributed to shifting cultivation, forest fires, felling of trees, natural calamities, anthropogenic
pressure and developmental activities.
In terms of area, Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover in the country followed by
Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Maharashtra. In terms of forest cover as a
percentage of their total geographical area, the top five states are Mizoram (85.41 percent),

Q3.Read the passage given below:
The problem of unemployment is a serious problem in our country. If millions of people are
without any jobs, its effect is very bad. A man without any employment is a burden on others. If
he has got to maintain a family, the situation is worse. Such unemployed persons are reduced to
poverty. It demoralises them and they are forced to do undesirable things. They may commit
crimes. They may create trouble and spread discontent. In fact, they are a source of danger to
society and the state.
The causes of unemployment are mainly the rapid growth of population, the prevailing system
and underdevelopment of industry and trade. The population of India is growing very rapidly. It
is very difficult to get jobs for all who are in need of it. The British Government had introduced a
system of education in this country for carrying on administration only. It is being continued in
free India also with very slight changes. The system of education prepares most young men to be
clerks. But neither the Government nor private firms can absorb all the educated unemployed
persons in their offices for clerical work. Industry and trade have not yet properly developed.
Cottage industries in the villages have been ruined owing to the establishment of large mills and
factories in towns. Consequently, many artisans have been thrown out of employment. There has
been great pressure on agricultural land because of the growth of population; consequently, many

Pg 4
cultivators have got no land for cultivation. All these are mainly responsible for this acute
problem of unemployment.
The acute problem of unemployment is a cause of unrest in the country. So the Government is
seriously thinking over the matter and trying to find a remedy. The remedy is to find work for the
people. The Government had earlier undertaken five-year plans for the material prosperity of the
country. For carrying out these plans many mills and factories had been set up both by the
Government and by industrialists. Many new offices had been started. Many educated young
men were absorbed in offices as clerks and in mills and factories as skilled workers. Uneducated
and unskilled men were being absorbed in mills and factories as labourers. But these measures
have been proved inadequate.
Our government is now encouraging the revival of cottage industries in the villages. This will
help many villagers to earn a living. Our Government is also trying to develop agriculture. But as
yet, it has not been able to cope with the situation fully. The number of unemployed persons is
increasing. So our Government should allow the establishment of a large number of large and
small technical and vocational institutions in the country. Only a limited number of bright young
men should try to get higher education in universities. Most young men try to enter technical or
vocational institutions.
After coming out of these, they may find jobs in factories and commercial firms. For this, of
course, more factories must be set up throughout the country. Unskilled labourers should be
taught various traits in technical institutes. They may find jobs in factories as skilled labourers.
They may also set up cottage industries in their villages. Government will have to help them with
loans to start their work. It is heartening to find that our Government has already taken some
steps in this direction. Nationalised banks are now giving lump sum loans to intending young
persons under self-employment schemes.
