Summary: What is computer bus?

I. Computer system
1. Definition
A computer system is a digital electronic device that can programmed to perform various operations as per the
requirements. It consists of both hardware and software components.

2. Hardware components
A computer system consist of number of components. Some components are internal to the system which are
mounted inside the computer casing. These components like CPU, RAM, hard disk, graphic card and mother card.

All these hardware components communicate between them when the computer is powered. They are connected to
the system with a network of wires.

The network of electrically wires which interconnect various hardware components are known as computer buses.

II. Computer bus

1. Definition
The computer bus is an electrical wired connection used in computer system which allows communication between
the various hardware components.

A bus consist of group of cables and each of these can carry 1 BIT (binary 0 OR 1) at a time. So that a group of bits
can be sent through the bus at the same time.

The network of different types buses used in the computer is called a bus system.

2. Different types of buses

The number of wires present in a bus could be 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit or 64 bit.

A computer system uses different types of buses on depending upon the system architecture. In effect, the size of a
bus is important because it determines how much of data (in bits) can be transmitted at one time. It improves the
processor performance.

For example:
- A 64-bits bus has sixty four cables thus can transmit 64 bits of data at a time.
- Whereas 8-bits has eight wires. It can transmit 8 bits of data at a time.

The computer bus can be in electrically wires used in different sizes and the bus present in the motherboard which
printed.

III. Importance and utility

This tutorial will be important for us because it permit us to improve our knowledge’s about computer bus. So, we
have learnt about the different types of buses and their characteristics.
