16.Urban sprawl and illegal settlement mapping and monitoring, the role of remote sensing and GIS.

My termpaper assignment mee material yoo argate buusi naf ergitaa.

Urban sprawl and illegal settlement mapping and monitoring can be done using **remote sensing
and GIS techniques**. These techniques provide a decision support system that enables researchers,
urban planners and resource managers to have a historical perspective of the earth, detect and
quantify urban land use changes which will inform their decision making process³. Remote sensing is
cost effective and technologically sound, so is increasingly used for the analysis of urban sprawl¹.

Review

Urban sprawl is a phenomenon that is characterized by low-density impervious surfaces, often

clumsy, extends along the fringes of metropolitan areas with unbelievable pace, disperse, auto-
dependent with environmentally and socially impacting characteristics. The process of urbanization
has a considerable hydrological impact in terms of influencing the nature of runoff and other
hydrological characteristics, delivering pollutants to rivers and causing erosion. Accurate information
on the extent of urban growth is of great interest for the municipalities of growing urban and
suburban areas for diverse purposes such as urban planning, water and land resource management,
marketing analysis, service allocation, etc. Urban authorities and municipal corporations are
required to devote more time, attention and effort to manage the use of land and other resources in
order to accommodating the expanding population or other urban land uses. Urban sprawl
monitoring and prediction are the basic information they need for long-term planning. For balanced
development, municipal authorities need tools to monitor how the land is currently used, assess
future demand, and take steps to assure adequacy of future supply. For a better planning of future
urban development and infrastructure planning, municipal authorities need to know urban sprawl
phenomenon and in what way it is likely to move in the years to come. Remote sensing is cost
effective and technologically sound, so is increasingly used for the analysis of urban sprawl¹.
