Application: Thevenin’s theorem is useful in analyzing the circuits having
variable load. For ex: In electrical power system, load is varying continuously,
therefore it is very difficult to calculate the current. In that type of circuit
problem, thevenin’s theorem is very useful to calculate the current across
variable load.

Procedure: let us consider an electrical circuit.

Step1: Calculation of open circuit voltage (Voc)/Thevenin’s equivalent
voltage (Vth) across the variable load

[Voc = Vth = Eb]

Step 2: Calculation of Thevenin’s equivalent resistance (Rth)

Voltage Source = Short circuited (Rint = 0)

Current Source = Open circuited (Rint = ∞)

[Rth = Ri]
Step 3: Draw thevenin’s equivalent circuit

𝑉𝑜𝑐
𝑖𝐿 =
𝑅𝑡ℎ + 𝑅𝐿

Problem: An electrical network configuration is shown in Figure

below. The resistances values are expressed in Ω. Determine the
current through RL when it takes a value of 10Ω.
Solution:
Step 1: Open circuit voltage calculation (Voc ):

40I+ 20I =120

I = 2A

40X2 + Voc -120 = 0

Voc = 120 – 80 = 40 V
Step 2: Thevenin’s equivalent resistance
calculation:

Rth = 40||20 + 60 = 73.33Ω

Step 3: Thevenin’s equivalent circuit:

𝑉𝑜𝑐
𝑖𝐿 =
𝑅𝑡ℎ +𝑅𝐿

40
𝑖𝐿 =
73.33+𝑅𝐿

Since RL = 10 Ω

40
𝑖𝐿 = = 0.480A
73.33+10
