Construction
Dimensions:
10 by 15 feet
Materials Needed:
- Steel trap door on the roof from the outside leading to the shelter- 1: We decided to use
steel because steel is very strong and sturdy. Additionally, steel can block gamma
radiation particles which are released from bombs.
- Walls/roof/floor- steel reinforced concrete: We decided to use steel reinforced concrete
because steel and concrete are best for blocking/repelling gamma radiation particles.
Furthermore, the steel acts as a foundation for the concrete so it has a lower chance of
being destroyed. Additionally, it has good inertial and thermal mass properties, making it
one of the best blast resistant materials. Lastly, it is a cheaper option than having the
whole shelter steel.
Air FIltration:
A hand-cranked blower- The air ventilation is attached to a pipe leading to the surface. When
you turn the crank, air would come from the outside, get filtered through a pipe, and produce
fresh air, filtered to keep out radioactive particles.
Waste Disposal:
- Composting toilet (a toilet that doesn’t need water to dispose of human waste, instead,
the toilet breaks down waste through a biological decomposition action)- 1
- Trash hole (a hole in the ground in which you dispose of your trash in as well as a lid to
conceal the smell)- 1
