FIRE SAFETY PRACTICES OF SCHOOL CANTEEN IN UNIVERSITY of CAGAYAN

VALLEY
TABLE OF CONTENTS

INTRODUCTION:
Fire safety education and training is not only required by

law, but it is also a very important skill to acquire in terms of

the safety of students and others who may be in the university

building. Fires damage property, cause personal injury, and can

even lead to loss of people as many buildings destroyed by fire

are not rebuilt. The way to prevent such dire consequences is

proper fire safety training.

Regarding construction, it is generally recommended to

always use non-combustible materials (stone, metal, ceramic,

etc.). The entire school canteen should be divided into fire

compartments. Each section is equipped with fireproof and

smokeproof walls, ceilings and doors, the latter of which close

automatically in case of fire. This will prevent the fire from

spreading to a wider area or even the entire building. Fire doors

always open outward for easy exit from the building in case of

fire. Especially in canteen kitchens, fire alarm systems have

proven to be a practical tool to detect smoke and automatically

notify the fire brigade. Smoke and heat removal systems also

reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

As with any public space, all canteen kitchens (and their

dining rooms) should be equipped with sufficient fire

extinguishing media. According to the book (The Regulation: "

Working in the Canteen Kitchen on pages 31 and 32), the correct

type and quantity of these fire extinguishers can be determined

using the DGUV tables. It depends on the room size, fire hazard,

and fire class. Fire hazards are classified into two categories:

Low fire hazard (e.g. sink area) and medium fire hazard (e.g.

kitchen). With regard to fire class, a distinction is made

between fire class A (solid, ejected material) and fire class B

(liquid or molten material). All fire extinguishers must be

stored in a conspicuous and accessible location. The storage area

must not be heavily soiled or damaged.

Uncontrolled fires can cause property damage as well as

significant loss of life. Most schools have canteens. This

usually involves handling some large LPG tanks, and these

accidents can also lead to fires. This issue should also be

monitored regularly to ensure fire safety on school premises.

Every school must take the necessary precautions to ensure that

nothing bad happens in the event of an emergency such as a fire.

Each floor should be equipped with fire extinguishers, fire

detectors, and other necessary fire safety equipment before the

fire spreads. Learn more about the importance of fire safety in

the school’s canteen.

In a school canteen fire tragedy or disaster, ensure that

adequate fire prevention procedures are in place and carefully

implemented, school authorities are well informed, and

appropriate school personnel are available to implement these

measures. properly assigned. You can prevent this by following

all government fire codes. There is proper training and

collaboration between students and teachers. School fire safety

is important for the simple reason that many children gather in

the same place and one fire can overwhelm them all.  Fire

protection in the school’s canteen is a very important issue

today as fires can get out of control in the canteen.

Addressing school fires requires action in three areas. The

first is a contingency plan. The second is educating staff,

students, and families on what to do in the event of a fire. The

third step is to make the school building fireproof.  Through

education, students can learn concepts of disaster management

that can develop proper awareness of disasters. Societies such as

families can therefore improve their capacity to respond to

incidents. Schools and students must be more resilient to

emergencies and prepared to mitigate their impact to ensure both

an effective response and the fastest and most efficient progress

possible in the classroom. Therefore, the purpose of this study

is to assess the fire safety practices of school canteen in the

University of Cagayan Valley for the calendar year 2023.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will aim to determine the fire safety practices of the

School Canteen of the University of Cagayan Valley, Tuguegarao

City, Cagayan for the Calendar Year 2023.

Specifically, it seeks to answer to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Year Level

2 What extent are the fire safety practices of the School

Canteen Personnel relative to:

2.1 Fire Safety Equipment Maintenance

2.2 Emergency Plan and Fire Safety Procedures

2.3 Fire Safety Risk Assessments

3 Are there significant differences in the assessments of the 2

groups on the fire safety practices of the School Canteen

Personnel when grouped according to year level?

4 What measures can be proposed to enhance the fire safety

practices of the School Canteen?

HYPOTHESIS

1. The significant differences in the assessments of the two

groups on the fire safety practices of the School Canteen

Personnel when grouped according to respondent’s year level.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will determine the different fire safety practices

that are needed in the school canteen of the University of

Cagayan Valley and eventually, this will help the following

people:

School Administrators – The results of this study may provide

some information as a basis for the new policy formulation and

improvement in the fire safety procedures of the School Canteen.

Teachers – This may help the teachers to give feedback on the

administration that the University has and help the School

canteen to have more improvements when it comes to their fire

safety practices.

Students- This study will help the student to understand and be

provided with what they need to know about fire safety practices

and to have a better knowledge about it.

Researchers- This study will help the future researcher with the

source and references for their study.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study will focus on the fire safety practices in the school

canteen offered by the School personnel of the University of

Cagayan Valley.

The object of the study is limited to two hundred (200) college

students in different year level who need to answer this research

study.
Furthermore, the researchers will also identify the things that

they need to know for fire safety practices if it has a poor

rating and the researchers will be able to suggest some

recommendations which will serve as their guide in order to have

a better administration in the University of Cagayan Valley when

it comes to their fire safety practices and this will give the

students the services that they deserve inside the community.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To provide a clearer understanding of the following, the

following terms are defined as they were used in the study:

University. This refers to the place where the students study and

learn new knowledge.

Sufficiency. This term refers to meeting the student’s wishes,

expectations, and needs inside the University.

Assessment. This refers to the evaluation or estimation of the

fire safety practices or the ability of personnel inside the

University.

School Canteen. This refers to the place where students buy their

food and drinks to replenish their energy. This place is located

behind the school and behind the school gym.

Students. This refers to someone who studies at the University to

gain more knowledge and other information.

Study. This refers to the devotion of time and attention to

acquiring more knowledge on this research paper specifically on

the fire safety practices that are provided by the University of

Cagayan Valley.
