MIXING
Cubasis 3 comes with the ability to fully mix and master your songs
with a studio quality mixer, legendary steinberg quality plugins and
carefully crafted mixing presets.

What is mixing? - Mixing is the process of blending multiple tracks

together in the most coherent and audibly pleasant way possible.
The goal of mixing is to bring out the best in your multi-track
recording by adjusting levels, panning, and time-based audio
effects such as chorus, reverb and delay.
MIXER
The mixer is used for controlling and adjusting the output param-
eters of your tracks to achieve the best mix for your project. Each
channel represents one track of your project with its name
displayed at the bottom.

1. Mixer Size - Use the two finger pinch gesture or the "5", "M" or
"XL" buttons (available on tablets only) to change the width of the
channel strips in the mixer. On tablets, you can hold and drag the
upper bar up or down to change the overall height of the mixer.
MIXING
2. Pan fader - Slide horizontally to adjust your track's stereo pan.

3. Track Controls - Easily access the track controls such as Mute S

Solo as well as the automation controls such as Read S Write.

4. Volume Fader - Slide the volume fader vertically to set the

track's gain. The volume levels during playback or recording are
visually shown on its right hand indicator.

5. Monitoring Controls - Here you'll find several controls including

the ability to monitor the audio input of your track routed through
the track's effects, enable or disable the "Record" button, or
access the tracks's effects with the "E" button.

6. Master Track - The last channel to the right of your screen

(labelled 1/2 Stereo Out) represents all of your project's channels
combined and routes to the first stereo output pair (channels 1 and
2). Consequently, it cannot be soloed or recorded on. You can add
up to eight master insert effects, that are applied to the whole mix.

How To Process Melodies

GROUP TRACKS
A Group track creates a submix of several audio or MIDI tracks and
applies the same effects to them. A group track contains no events
but does display settings and automation for the corresponding
group.

1. Routing - Individual tracks can be added to a group track via

the routing tab of the group track, or from within the input display
of individual channel strips in the mixer.
MIXING
2. Track Inputs - Displays a list of tracks in the project high-lighting
which one's are assigned to the currently selected group. To
modify the inputs, tap the name of the track you'd like to add to
the group and tap it again to remove it from the group.

3. Channel - Each group track has a corresponding channel in the

Mixer.

4. Add - To add a new "Group Track"

click the "ADD +" button and
tap on "GROUP".

ARRANGEMENT
Arrangement is the flow of a song from start to finish. Depending on
the genre it typically has sections such as an intro, verse,
pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, and outro. Arrangement is a way of
looking at your track from several angles to carve away the excess
and support what's already working.

How To Arrange Tracks

EVENTS
Cubasis' workflow is based on tracks and events. Any content
within the tracks is arranged within rectangular blocks which are
referred to as either "Audio Events" or "MIDI Events".

Select a single event by tapping it and edit its content by double

tapping it. Events can be moved around by dragging them and
can be moved into another track of the same type.

You can also adjust the length of your event by dragging the
bottom left / right handle horizontally.
ARRANGEMENT
1. Transpose - Transposes notes on a semitone and octave scale
for MIDI events and pitch shifts audio material by cents, semitones
or octaves.

2. Quantize - Quantizes all selected notes (or notes within selected

events). Cubasis also features an Auto Quantize option.

3. Time Stretch - The time-stretch tool allows you to stretch audio

events to fit the tempo of a song and align correctly on the grid.

4. Ruler - The vertical lines and numbers on the ruler indicate the
bars and beats (measures). The ruler holds the playhead (black
vertical line) and two locators. To position the playhead, slide any-
where on the ruler.

5. Audio Event - An audio event that could have been either

imported or recorded directly into Cubasis.

5. MIDI Event - A midi event that could have either been drawn di-
rectly in the Key Editor or recorded into Cubasis using an external
MIDI device.

7. Handlebars - Drag the top centred white handle vertically to

adjust the event's gain (volume). Drag the top left / right handles
horizontally to fade the event in and out.

MASTERING
Cubasis 3 comes with studio quality plugins to master your track
including EQs, Limiters and a Mastering Strip.

What is mastering? - Mastering is the final step of audio post-pro-

duction. The purpose of mastering is to balance sonic elements of
a stereo mix and optimize playback across all systems and media
formats so that it sounds as good as possible wherever the listener
may hear the song.
MASTERING STRIP
The Master Strip Plug-in Suite allows you to make individual tracks
and complete projects sound excellent in an intuitive and creative
way right within Cubasis.

1. Multiband Compressor - Allows a signal to be split into three

frequency bands. You can specify the level, bandwidth, and
compressor characteristics for each band.

2. Stereo Imager - Allows you to expand or reduce the stereo width

of your audio in up to three bands. This way you can
independently adjust the stereo image in defined frequency
domains.

3. Loudness Maximizer - Raises the loudness of audio material with-

out the risk of clipping. The plug-in provides two modes, Classic and
Modern, that offer different algorithms and parameters.
MASTERING
Since mastering is usually the last step in the overall music
creation process it becomes extremely important to first make sure
you have a good mix before you begin using the Master Strip.

SETTINGS
Cubasis 3 is easy to both configure and customize with additional
settings that can be accessed from the "SETUP" menu in the upper
right hand corner of the app.

You can configure things like the Metronome volume, Bluetooth

connectivity, Midi Clock and more as well as customize Cubasis by
changing the Background Color or toggle Labeling notes on keys.

Next we'll dive into the setup menu and explain some of the most
common settings.

Sample Rates 6 Latency Explained

AUDIO SETTINGS
Covering all the settings is out of the scope of this guide but we did
want to at least mention the most commonly used settings.

1. Background Audio - If background audio is switched on, Cubasis

playback will continue in the background and if a MIDI track is
armed it will continue to be playable via MIDI devices, even if you
press the home button or start up another app.

2. Device Latency - The latency value determines your device's

audio buffer length in milliseconds. Setting the value too high might
cause latency in your MIDI keyboard and setting it too low may
cause Cubasis to crackle or slow down.

3. Audio Engine Latency - Multi-core rendering yields the most

performance benefit when playing projects with many tracks and
effects on devices with many CPU cores, where Audio Engine
Latency is enabled. However, when running projects without many
tracks or effects than we recommend you disable this option. In
most cases disabling this option can actually remove crackling.

4. Input Gain - Adjust the input gain scale from your microphone or
MIDI LEARN
MIDI learn allows you to map any hardware button, knob, fader or
other control that sends MIDI CC or MIDI note messages to a
button, knob or fader in Cubasis.

1. Enable MIDI Learn - To start mapping your controls, simply tap

the Learn button (or press Alt + L on your keyboard) to enable learn
mode. This will automatically enable MIDI Learn and create a new
user preset if you had not created one yet.
SETTINGS
2. Presets - The Presets button brings up the list of presets. The top
entry lets you create a new user preset. Below it, factory presets are
listed first, and user presets are listed below.

3. Midi Learn Menu- Easily access MIDI learn controls while in learn
mode such as Exit MIDI Learn or Reset MIDI Earn from wherever you
are in Cubasis

4. Green Overlay - In learn mode, all Cubasis controls that can be

assigned get a green overlay.
