1. Scope
1.1 The use of Cutting, Welding & Burning has caused numerous injuries, and often can be fatal!
Work involving welding, cutting and burning can increase the fire hazard on any job, and the
following should be considered prior to the start of job. This work is considered “Hot Work”
This procedure outlines the steps and considerations to be taken when using cutting, welding
& burning on all SDOL Rigs.
2. Objective
2.1 The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that the operation of cutting, welding & burning are
controlled to prevent any injury to the individual(s).
3. Responsibilities
Ensure Drillers and any crewmembers involved with task are trained in and follow this
procedure
3.2 Driller
4.1 The hazards of not properly using cutting, welding & burning equipment are:
Personal injury
Fires
Explosions
Equipment Damage
Fatalities

5. Instructions
5.2 Always ensure that adequate ventilation is supplied since hazardous fumes can be
created during welding, cutting or burning.
5.3 Where other workers may also be exposed to the hazards created by welding, cutting or
burning, they must be alerted to these hazards or be protected by the use of "screens".
5.6 Check the work area for combustible material and possible flammable vapors before
starting work.
5.7 A welder should never work alone. A fire or spark watch should be maintained.
5.8 Check cables and hoses to protect them from slag or sparks.
5.9 Never weld or cut lines, drums, tanks, etc. that have been in service without making sure
that all precautions regarding contents have been taken and any permits needed are
obtained.
5.10 Never enter, weld or cut in a confined space without proper gas tests and a required
safety lookout.
5.11 When working overhead, use fire resistant materials (blankets, tarps) to control or contain
slag and sparks.
5.12 Cutting and welding must not be performed where sparks or cutting slag will fall on
cylinders.
5.13 Open all cylinder valves slowly. The valve handle should be kept on the valve spindle
when in use.
